How the Spurs’ Keldon Johnson plans to get back on track offensively
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Sixth Man of the Year is struggling offensively so far in the playoffs.
Expectations were high for Spurs forward Keldon Johnson entering his first postseason.
Coming off an outstanding regular season that netted him the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award, Johnson was expected to pick up where he left off in the regular season when he averaged 13.2 points per game on 51.9% shooting from the field on 9.7 attempts per game.
But through the first three games, Johnson is averaging just 5.0 points and shooting 27.8% on 6.0 attempts.
Asked about his sub-par offensive production, the seventh-year pro preached patience.
“It’s just a matter of just finding my rhythm and keep doing what I’m doing,” he told the San Antonio Express-News.
Johnson had three points in Game 1, seven points in Game 2 and five points in Game 3, which the Spurs 120-108 Friday night to take a 2-1 lead in the first-round Western Conference series.
After going 0 for 5 from the floor in the first half in Game 3, Johnson got his first points of the game when he sank a pair of free throws with 3:50 left in the period. His first field goal came when he sank a 3-pointer with 1:30 left in the third quarter.
For the game, Johnson missed 6 of his 7 shots from the field.
“Every game is different when it comes to the playoffs, and I’m just feeling out the game and trying to find my rhythm, trying to find my groove and my niche and just continue to play hard,” he said.
While Johnson isn’t scoring like he did in the regular season, he’s been contributing in other areas. He will enter Game 4 on Sunday averaging 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game after posting norms of 5.4, 1.4 and 0.6 in the regular season while playing in all 82 games.
“As long as we’re winning, that’s the most important thing," Johnson said. "I’ll find my rhythm (offensively) as we go throughout. I’ll continue to take the same shots and I’ll make the shots.”
