pic.twitter.com/BLit3vzmN9

With a couple days off to recover, the Spurs hope guard De’Aaron Fox will be closer to full strength on his injured ankle come Wednesday’s tipoff against the Knicks in the NBA Finals.

“I’m not sure how to answer the question on 100%, but it feels like it’s moving in a better direction,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “With rest, I hope he’s better tomorrow than he is today.”

The Spurs closed out the Thunder in the Western Conference finals on Saturday in Oklahoma City, giving Fox three days to rest heading into the Finals.

The ankle has been touch-and-go since he suffered the injury May 10 in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves, when he collided with Ayo Dosunmu on a dive for a loose ball.

Fox fought through the final two games of the series but missed the first two games of the Western Conference finals. Even after Fox returned for Game 3, Johnson noted that the injury has been “reaggravated at times,” with Fox limping off the court during the third quarter of his first game back following a collision with Lu Dort. He returned early in the fourth quarter and started through the rest of the series.

“His mental toughness, physically, mentally, at some stage his values with being out there,” Johnson said. “I think there’s certain things we learn with our group that lend to our style of play and brand.”

Fox was unspectacular statistically in the Western Conference finals, averaging 11.2 points and 6.2 assists per game on 36.5% shooting. But Johnson said Fox was critical in helping San Antonio take care of the ball, as the Spurs committed 21 and 23 turnovers in the two games he missed but had no more than 15 in any of the five games he played.

Spurs rookie guard Dylan Harper, who was also part of that turnaround as he recovered from an adductor injury, credited Fox for helping him find a footing in the league.

“He hates when I say this, but as my uncle in a sense, my big brother, just to have him kind of to help guide me because this is year nine for him, and this is my first year, so he’s done a great job of mentoring me,” Harper said. “I feel like what he brings to the table every team would love to have, and I feel like I’m just lucky to play with him.”
