With Game 7 looming, sleep didn’t come easy for Spurs’ Devin Vassell

San Antonio Spurs forward Devin Vassell talks to reporters after participating in shootaround at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Saturday, May 30, 2026, to prepare for Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
OKLAHOMA CITY — Sleep did not come easy for Spurs forward Devin Vassell the night before Saturday’s pressure-packed showdown with the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals.
“I was tossing and turning a little bit for sure,” Vassell said Saturday morning at shootaround at the Paycom Center.
Adding to the pressure: Vassell expected a lot of noise to be coming from Scissortail Park close to the team hotel.
“I (knew) I got to get good sleep because I (knew) they were going to be playing music out there at that park trying to keep us up. I was trying to get as much sleep as possible,” he said.
Vassell finally drifted off to never-never land and appeared to be full of energy during shootaround, where he joked around with teammates Harrison Barnes, Stephon Castle and Julian Champagnie while going through shooting drills at the portion of the walkthrough open to the media.
“You dream of this as a kid,” Vassell said of playing in his first Game 7.
“Just more excited than anything,” he said of his overall emotions. “We have a chance to do something special.”
Vassell said the Spurs plan to take it to the Thunder from the opening tip.
“We’re just going to come out and be aggressive and be physical and be the first one to punch,” he said.
Vassell said he remembers dreaming of hitting a game-winning shot at the buzzer in an NBA Game 7.
“It’s the NBA Finals, you shoot a shot, everybody goes crazy,” he said. “You get it back, you shoot it again. Yeah, I’ve done that all the time, but not recently.”
Vassell was asked if he’s thought about how Saturday’s game is being viewed in terms of the league’s future, with two powerhouses with young centerpieces (the Spurs’ 22-year-old Victor Wembanyama, Oklahoma City’s 27-year-old Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) going head to head in what could be a preview of the Western Conference finals for years to come.
“Nah, we’re all just living in it right now and we’re not trying to look too far ahead right now,” Vassell said. "We’re just focused on this game. We’re blessed to be in this position. But we’re so focused on this game and executing the game plan we have.
“That’s all we’re worried about.”
Vassell said he knows it will be plenty loud at the arena.
“What more could you ask for? Western Conference finals, going against the defending (NBA) champs in their city, in their arena,” he said. “We know it’s going to be loud. I can’t wait.”
