Oklahoma City’s efficient 3-point shooting is a big reason why the Thunder are up 2-1 in the Western Conference finals heading into Sunday night’s game at the Frost Bank Center.
Powered by Jaylin Williams hitting 5 of 6 from beyond the arc on his way to a playoff-high 18 points off the bench, the Thunder shot 44.7% (17 of 38) from distance in Friday night’s 123-108 victory.
For the series, the defending NBA champions are shooting nearly 40% from distance.
So what do the Spurs need to do to stop Oklahoma City’s 3-point barrage?
“Their percentages are high because we’re not there on the catch and we’re not contesting shots at a high level,” Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox said after shootaround Sunday morning. “And I think the percentages show whenever we do the things we’re supposed to do, the percentages drop.”
The biggest outside threat for the Thunder has been Alex Caruso, who is shooting 60.9% from 3-point range on 7.6 attempts after connecting on just 20.3% of 3.2 attempts in the regular season.
“Someone like Caruso is shooting 60 percent. A lot of that has to do with us not contesting shots, not being there when he’s catching the ball,” Fox said. “I mean, these guys are NBA players. They have a team full of guys I think besides maybe (second-year guard) Jared (McCain) that won the championship last year. So, Caruso has two championships (one with the Thunder last year, one with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020). He’s been there done that. We can’t allow those guys to be comfortable when they are catching the ball.”
