Spurs vs. Thunder: Game 2 Keys to Victory

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) slaps hands with San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) after Wembanyama was fouled while scoring a basket during the second half of Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Monday, May 18, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Thunder 122-115 in double overtime.

GAME 2 KEYS TO VICTORY

Cut down on turnovers

Had the Spurs dropped Game 1, their 23 turnovers would have been the key culprit in the defeat.

It is the one thing teams cannot do against the Thunder swarming defense and expect to survive.

Those miscues led to 28 OKC points Monday, a huge margin in a game that went to double overtime.

If De’Aaron Fox is able to return from the ankle injury that kept him out of Game 1, it would help the Spurs’ chances of cleaning things up.

Stephon Castle coughed up 11 of the Spurs’ turnovers in the series opener, a number he likely does not reach if Fox is on the floor to take some of the pressure off.

No matter who is in the lineup for the Spurs for Game 2, better ball security will be an imperative.

The Spurs dodged a bullet by winning a high-turnover game against the Thunder. They might be hard-pressed to do it again.

Let Caruso cook

One of the Spurs’ preferred defensive strategies against Oklahoma City has been to assign Victor Wembanyama to defend a non-shooting perimeter player, leaving him free to roam, wreak havoc and cut off paint drives.

Alex Caruso made the Spurs pay for that approach in Game 1, hitting eight 3-pointers on his way to 31 points. Despite Caruso’s recent rash of sharpshooting, expect the Spurs to double down on that strategy in Game 2.

Game 1 marked only the second 30-point performance of Caruso’s career. The other came in 2019 as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. It is a safe bet Caruso won’t be able to repeat the feat in Game 2.

Outside of Caruso, the rest of the Thunder roster combined to go 9-for-31 from 3-point range Monday.

With the Spurs committed to keeping Shai Gilgeous-Alexander out of the paint at all costs, OKC’s corps of perimeter shooters will need to shoot much better in Game 2.

The Spurs are betting they won’t.

Brace for an MVP bounce-back

On the night NBA commissioner Adam Silver handed him his second consecutive MVP award, Gilgeous-Alexander struggled to get going.

By halftime, Gilgeous-Alexander had four points, his lowest-scoring half in two years. Not surprisingly, Oklahoma City produced its lowest-scoring half of the season at 44 points.

Gilgeous-Alexander eventually found his way to a decent box score – 24 points, 12 assists, five steals – but the Spurs made him work hard for all of it. The Spurs threw all sorts of bodies at the OKC star – Castle, Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell, Carter Bryant – and together they limited him to a 7-for-23 shooting night.

Gilgeous-Alexander was named MVP for a reason. The Spurs should be prepared for him to come back strong in Game 2.
