(Victor Wembanyama)

(De’Aaron Fox)

评分:A-

(Stephon Castle)

(Devin Vassell)

评分:A

(Julian Champagnie)

(Dylan Harper)

(Luke Kornet)

(Keldon Johnson)

(Carter Bryant)

(Harrison Barnes)

(Mitch Johnson)

Playoff Grades: San Antonio Spurs vs. Oklahoma City Thunder – Game 3

The San Antonio Spurs scored the first 15 points of Game 3. Unfortunately, that was the end of the good times in the Frost Bank Center. The Oklahoma City Thunder dominated the rest of the way to win the game by a final count of 123-108 to take a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference Finals.

Stats: Spurs vs. Thunder

Spurs vs. Thunder – Final Grades

Victor Wembanyama

Wembanyama tried to shoulder some of the blame following the Game 3 loss but he played well. In fact, the Spurs outscored the Thunder by four points when he was on the court. He was 6-for-10 from two, 2-for-5 from three and 8-for-10 at the line. He also only turned it over twice while passing well. Defensively, Wembanyama was once again a force to be reckoned with in the paint and moved well on the perimeter. Two areas were weaknesses on this night. First of all, four rebounds (and no offensive boards) in 39 minutes was not enough. Wembanyama needs to be dominating on the glass for the Spurs to thrive in this series. Secondly, I thought his overall energy level was lacking. It’s not surprising that he’s tired but he’ll need to summon energy from somewhere if the Spurs are going to make this a competitive series going forward.

Grade: B

De’Aaron Fox

Given the circumstances, I thought Fox was really good. He’s clearly still in a lot of pain due to the high ankle sprain. Jumping appears to be particularly painful for him. But despite the physical limitations, Fox produced quite well. He scored 11 points rather quickly and the Thunder had trouble containing him. His production slowed but he still finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists in 31 minutes. Fox gutted it out on the defensive end and kept competing even though he seemed to reinjure his ankle a couple times. Hopefully he can keep it up and make it through the series. Without him, San Antonio probably doesn’t have much of a chance.

Grade: A-

Stephon Castle

The rollercoaster ride continued for the third consecutive affair. The good: Castle’s aggression paid immediate dividends with 14 free throw attempts. He also handed out seven assists in 35 minutes. Perhaps most impressively, Castle only had one turnover. Considering he had 20 turnovers in the first two games, that was a huge improvement. Defensively, he competed well. The bad: Castle was 1-for-8 from the field, including 1-for-5 from deep. He sometimes dribbled too much and he sometimes took away from the team’s offensive flow. While he turned it over less, Castle still needs to learn how to attack the Thunder within the framework of the offense. Defensively, he wasn’t as disciplined as usual and had a few unnecessary fouls. Overall: The guy is trying his hardest but he hasn’t been able to put together anything resembling a complete game.

Grade: C+

Devin Vassell

One thing we can take away from this postseason run is the fact that Vassell is a player who is made for the playoffs. He’s doing really well against in Thunder even when there is a lot of struggling going on around him. He finished Game 3 with 20 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, including 3-for-6 from deep and 5-for-5 at the free throw line. He also tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven and didn’t turn the ball over. Defensively, Vassell was really good. He had half of the team’s eight steals and played well individually and team-wise.

Grade: A

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie hit both of his two-point attempts, rebounded pretty well, made the right passes and finished the game without a turnover. He also played well defensively while avoiding mistakes on that end for the most part. Sadly, though, he lost a lot of his value by going 2-for-8 from three-point territory. As good as Champagnie is elsewhere, the Spurs need him to hit threes for him to be near peak value. A hot three-point shooting game could be the difference between a win and a loss in the next few games.

Grade: B-

Dylan Harper

Harper was questionable after getting hurt during Game 2. The rookie suited up and gave it his all in Game 3. In 17 minutes, the outcome was regrettably substandard. He was 2-for-7 from the field, had as many assists as turnovers (two), and his defense wasn’t as spry. Harper should be commended for playing through an injury but the Spurs have grown to lean on him in the playoffs so any dip in his level of play really hurts right about now.

Grade: C

Luke Kornet

I mean, it’s not completely his fault but Kornet needs to step up when Wembanyama rests because the Spurs can’t get any stops when their superstar is off the floor. One way or another, Kornet needs to help generate stops. Nothing else really matters if OKC is getting a guaranteed bucket every time up the court when Wemby sits.

Grade: C-

Keldon Johnson

Ugh. Unfortunately, Johnson was really bad. Defensively, he was slow and confused. He didn’t rebound well. His situational awareness was poor. Offensively, Johnson was 1-for-5 and missed open passing lanes. He’s trying to do too much while getting away from the role that made him so valuable during the regular season. It’s going to be hard for the Spurs to win if KJ continues to be the worst player on the court.

Grade: D-

Carter Bryant

Bryant hit a three-pointer in his ten minutes, but his impact was nothing to write home about. He fouled too much and his individual defense was rarely an asset. He’s too jumpy and playing with too much nervous energy right now. I like Bryant’s physicality but he needs to rein it in a bit.

Grade: C-

Harrison Barnes

Barnes missed a three-pointer but otherwise didn’t do anything notable in his three minutes on the court.

Grade: Inc.

Mitch Johnson

I don’t think a large amount of blame should be directed at Coach Mitch but he wasn’t exactly helping matters. He seemed to kill a couple runs via untimely substitutions. He hasn’t been able to figure out a way to keep the non-Wemby minutes from killing the squad. The bench unit is aimless and getting run out of the building. On a related note, the starters are probably playing too much. Coach Mitch probably has to go back to the drawing board if the Spurs are going to climb out of this hole.
