评分:A+

(Stephon Castle)

(Dylan Harper)

评分:A

(Devin Vassell)

(Julian Champagnie)

(Keldon Johnson)

(Carter Bryant)

(Luke Kornet)

(Harrison Barnes)

(Mitch Johnson)

Spurs at Thunder – Final Grades

Victor Wembanyama

This has to be considered the best game of Wembanyama’s already storied career. I mean, where do you start? Defensively, he was beyond dominant. He dictated every possession and was completely locked in the entire game. Wembanyama shut down the paint, rotated perfectly and stuck to the gameplan. Rebounding-wise, he was a monster. He pulled down 15 boards on the defensive end and nine big ones on the offensive side of the court. Speaking of offense, Wembanyama poured in 41 points and shot 14-for-25 from the field and 12-for-13 from the free throw line. Beyond the audacious numbers, the tall Frenchman had more big plays than you could count on two hands. From the game-ending block to the three-pointer that will forever be talked about in any universe that remembers the game of basketball, Wembanyama was otherworldly beyond description.

Grade: A+

Stephon Castle

Talk about highs and lows, Castle was on a one-man rollercoaster. The good: Castle led the way with 11 assists, many of which were highlight-worthy. He had great passes to Wembanyama and even better passes across the court to three-point shooters. Castle was also 6-for-7 at the line and his toughness allowed him to total 17 points in difficult circumstances. Defensively, he was great. He competed at a high level while limiting his fouls and coming up with many momentous plays on that end. The bad: Well, yeah, the 11 turnovers have to headline this category. He was too loose with the ball, second-guessed too many decisions and fell victim too often to OKC’s pressure. Missing his final five three-pointer attempts didn’t help matters and there were times when his confidence uncharacteristically waned. Overall: It wasn’t the prettiest game by Castle but the Spurs don’t win this game without Castle’s chutzpah.

Grade: B

Dylan Harper

With De’Aaron Fox missing the game with an ankle injury, Harper filled in … and he did better than anyone could have fairly expected. This 20-year-old rookie is already so damn good. Let’s start with his defense. Harper was very good on the ball but he was way more impactful away from the ball. His ability to break up drives as a help defender and read kickout passes allowed him to rack up seven steals. Offensively, Harper didn’t shoot the best (7-for-13 from two, 1-for-7 from three) but he still scored 24 points. He went 7-for-7 at the free throw line, authored a number of very important passes and somehow only turned it over once in 47 minutes of some of the most intense basketball I’ve ever seen. Hell of a game by Harper.

Grade: A

Devin Vassell

Vassell led the way with 51 minutes and his ability to play that many minutes at an above average level was quietly a big part of this win. Defensively, he continues his great showing in the playoffs. Out on the perimeter, he did exactly what the coaching staff wanted him to do. And then Vassell had one of the biggest moments of the entire affair when he blocked Chet at the rim in the second overtime. Offensively, he was solid. He shot well enough to keep OKC honest — including a couple big-time makes. Vassell also had a couple impressive passes. All in all, Vassell continues to be a major part of this thing.

Grade: B+

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie looks like a legitimate playoff starter — and that’s been an important storyline for the good guys. Offensively, he successfully spread the court by being unafraid to shoot. His 3-for-11 accuracy from deep wasn’t great but it was enough to cause a palpable amount of gravity. Defensively, I thought Champagnie was really good. He didn’t try to do too much but he simultaneously came up with key plays in hectic moments. From rebounds to blocks to fast break defense, he made his presence felt. Good stuff.

Grade: B+

Keldon Johnson

This wasn’t the Sixth Man of the Year version of KJ that we knew and loved in the regular season but he was able to keep his head above water. He wasn’t rebounding, his defense was hit-or-miss and he was too often trying to do too much but Johnson hit 3-of-6 from downtown and that was enough to remain an asset. Hopefully he can get back to his burly drives, ferocious rebounding and indomitable will … but on this night, at least, his perimeter shooting was enough.

Grade: B-

Carter Bryant

Sheesh. We’ve known for a while that Bryant has the wherewithal to become a great defensive player — but to do what he did against SGA on this stage was eye-opening. The rookie hounded the MVP relentlessly and that energy sparked his squad. There were some mistakes and he was obviously helped by having Wembanyama lurking but it was difficult to not yearn for more Bryant minutes. Offensively, Bryant hit a three-pointer and avoided turning it over in his 14 minutes. All told, the youngster is fearlessly balling … and it’s a pleasure to witness.

Grade: B+

Luke Kornet

Filling in for a Wembanyama playing on all-galaxy mode is a thankless job but, man, Kornet has to do better than he did in Game 1. Offensively, he was sloppy with the ball, wasn’t screening as well as usual and got in the way too often. Defensively, the Thunder started salivating the moment he stepped on the hardwood and Kornet did nothing to dissuade the state of Oklahoma from thinking it was an all-you-can-eat buffet when he subbed in.

Grade: D

Harrison Barnes

Barnes played six minutes and the only way he dented the scoresheet was by missing a two-pointer. Otherwise, the veteran did just about nothing out there. It sounds crazy but I think it’s safe to say the lights are too bright for him right now — and this is a dude who was a starter on a championship team.

Grade: D

Mitch Johnson

It was a damn fine coaching performance from Johnson. The gameplans on both ends were pristine. I like how he stuck to his guns on defense even with Caruso having the game of his life. Offensively, the Spurs plotted ways to get Wembanyama the ball in advantageous situations against OKC’s smaller defenders — and it worked in real life. Rotation-wise, well, a lot of it was just keeping the starters in as much as possible so it’s difficult to give Coach Mitch too much credit for that. But trusting Bryant in 14 minutes in a WCF game was the type of game-altering decision that should be remembered.
