OKLAHOMA CITY — Journeyman Jordan McLaughlin is in line for extended minutes in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals should injuries continue to sideline guards De’Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper.
It’s a prospect that doesn’t worry any of his teammates given how the 6-foot, seventh-year veteran performed in spot duty at times during the regular season and in Wednesday night’s 122-113 loss to the Thunder.
“Every single time J-Mac comes in, he makes the right play, hits a big shot,” said forward Devin Vassell, who had 22 points. "As soon as he came in (tonight), he wasn’t even warm yet and he hits a three.
“He’s steady. If he needs to come in and play, I don’t think anybody is worried or concerned.”
With Fox sidelined for the second straight game with a sore right ankle and his replacement, Harper, forced to leave the game late in the third period due to what the Spurs called a right leg injury, McLaughlin logged seven minutes after staying on the bench for all of the Spurs’ 122-115 double-overtime win in Game 1 on Monday even though coach Mitch Johnson said he considered calling his number several times to give his tired regulars a breather.
McLaughlin, who played for Minnesota in the 2024 Western Conference finals, came into Game 2 expecting to play some.
“Coach had mentioned for the guys that didn’t play (in Game 1) to stay ready and to go in there and make some plays,” McLaughlin said.
Right off the bat, the Southern Cal alumnus made a play, scoring on a step-back 3-pointer just 32 seconds after he entered the game late in the first period. He hit another shot from beyond the arc in the third to finish with six points on 2 of 3 from the field and one assist.

“He’s done a great job of being ready when his name’s called,” Johnson said. “Very smart basketball player. Knows how to execute and gives us toughness. He was great for us (tonight).”
And he said all the right things in the locker room.
“The takeaway is we never quit, we never wavered and we’re going to keep fighting,” McLaughlin said. “We think we’re a really good team and we got a shot at it.”
In addition to sounding that positive note, he also defended mistake-plagued guard Stephon Castle, who had a team-high 25 points and eight assists but finished with nine turnovers after committing 11 in Game 1.
“We trust Steph in his playmaking decisions,” McLaughlin said. “He’s a great player. He’s given us everything he has out there. Him having the ball in his hands a lot (with Fox injured), he’s going to have quite a few turnovers. He’s trying to do the right things, but we can do a better job helping him out a little bit and we will.”
McLaughlin was also quick to point out that he had one of the Spurs’ 21 turnovers on a night the Thunder finished with a 27-10 edge in points off turnvoers.
“We all just got to take better care of the ball,” McLaughlin said. “Coach has always said the ball is gold and so we got to treat it as that. I had one myself. That’s one of my pet peeves. I hate turning the ball over.”
Like Vassell, Spurs forward Keldon Johnson is confident McLaughlin will acquit himself well if he winds up playing a lot in Game 3.
“He’s been consistent for us all year,” the NBA Sixth Man of the Year said after scoring 10 points and grabbing five rebounds. "He’s dependable. I feel every time we need him, he produces. Every single time you know what you are going to get out of Jordan McLaughlin. And he’s been in this game for a little bit. It’s his second Western Conference finals, so he has playoff experience.
“But it’s been an all-year long thing with Jordan. He’s consistent and even-keeled. It’s impressive and that’s what makes him good.”
