Jordan McLaughlin made the most of some rare meaningful minutes Friday night.
With the backcourt thinned due to injuries to De’Aaron Fox (hamstring) and rookie Dylan Harper (calf), Mitch Johnson has been forced to insert the 6-foot guard into the rotation.
McLaughlin responded in a big way against Houston with nine points, matching the most the seventh-year pro has scored in a game since coming to the Spurs from Sacramento along with Fox last February in a three-team trade.
“That’s what we expected,” Johnson said of McLaughlin’s play against the Rockets. “That’s why we brought him back. He’s a professional, a mature adult, a great teammate who’s a really cerebral, skilled basketball player.”
Seeking to fill the bottom of their bench with veterans, the Spurs signed the Californian to a one-year, $3 million deal in the offseason after he averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 assists in 6.9 minutes over 18 games with them last season.
In nine minutes against the Rockets, McLaughlin hit 4 of 6 from the field, including his only attempt from deep, in nine minutes. He also had a rebound and one of the Spurs’ season-high 15 steals.
