Why guard Jordan McLaughlin is the Spurs’ ‘extreme professional’

San Antonio Spurs guard Jordan McLaughlin (11) stands for the National Anthem before the Spurs’ game against the Phoenix Suns at Moody Center on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, in Austin, Texas.
MIAMI — Jordan McLaughlin no longer receives the annual goal-setting lists from his father that helped him become an All-Pac 12 performer at Southern California before eventually gaining a foothold in the NBA.
But that doesn’t mean the elder McLaughlin is no longer a constant source of support for the Spurs reserve guard.
“We kind of have gotten away from it the last couple of years, but he’s always in my corner, texting me before games, after games, just telling me to go out there and play hard and do what I do,” McLaughlin said.
What the 29-year-old seventh-year pro has been doing lately is giving the playoff-bound Spurs valuable, steady spot minutes that has allowed coach Mitch Johnson to rest some banged-up starters as the playoffs approach.
Case in point, with Stephon Castle (hip) and Devin Vassell (hamstring) out against Indiana on Saturday night, the 6-foot McLaughlin had six points on 2-of-3 shooting from 3-point range, three assists and two steals in 18 minutes to help the Spurs down the Pacers 134-119 for their fifth win in a row.
“Lindy Waters and Jordan McLaughlin played 35 minutes tonight of really, really sharp basketball,” Johnson said afterward. “And so that gives you even more confidence as a team, an organization, as a coach, that if guys aren’t at their best, we can (rest them).”
The Spurs’ smallest player also came up big in the 119-115 road win last week over the Los Angeles Clippers, recording three points, two rebounds, an assist and a plus-11 rating.
“J-Mac gave us 10 minutes of really mature, professional basketball,” Johnson said after that one. “We needed every second.”
And it’s been that way throughout the season. When called on, McLaughlin is always ready — no matter the situation.
“This season is long, circumstances happen, and we expect every member of this team to be ready at all times,” Johnson said. “And when someone that doesn’t play as much (like McLaughlin) answers the bell, it proves that. That’s a professional player in this league.”
Johnson said McLaughlin, like many all of the Spurs reserves, does a lot of the unsung yeoman’s work that win games, Johnson said.
“Sometimes it’s just moving the ball. It’s talking in transition defense. It’s a box out to let your teammate get the rebound,” Johnson said. "It’s those things that go into winning games. The margin of error is that small. And I think it’s easy, especially in this day and age with social media and highlights and all those things, to get enamored and caught up in box scores and stat lines. But there’s plenty of times where those minutes (by reserves) have led to games being flipped, whether it’s Jordan McLaughlin being solid in the Clippers game, whether that’s Carter Bryant bringing energy, whether that’s Luke Kornet setting screens and being so consistent in his resistance at the rim.
“When you’re talking about long-term, bigger-picture winning, those things are just as important as the obvious talent production from some of those high-end guys.”

San Antonio Spurs guard Jordan McLaughlin (0) guards Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas (24) during the third quarter of the Spurs’ home opener at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025. The Spurs defeated the Nets, 118-107.
McLaughlin came to the Spurs from Sacramento in February 2025 as the overlooked piece in the blockbuster, three-team deal that brought All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio. Overlooked, that is, by just about everyone but general manager Brian Wright and his staff.
“We definitely didn’t view him as a throw in,” Johnson said. “Obviously, De’Aaron Fox is the headliner name. I’m not going to avoid that fact. But Jordan McLaughlin had good times in Minnesota and played well for Sacramento at times. And he was someone we thought could be a good member of this team. And we brought him back this year when he was a free agent.”
McLaughlin said he knows the Spurs “chose him for a reason.”
“I know my job and my role, this being my seventh season,” he said. “I know what I can do. I know I can help a team win.”
McLaughlin signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Spurs last July, a big deal for him and his wife, Anissa, who last year gave birth to the couple’s first child, a son they named Zaiden.
“Being in a place for more than one year always adds to happiness, especially with a family now,” McLaughlin said.
McLaughlin grew up in a sports-crazed family along with his three sisters in Fontana, Calif., near Los Angeles after being born in Pasadena. His father, Thomas, worked as a store manager at a T.J. Maxx after a few years as a pitcher in the San Francisco Giants farm system. His mother, Lisa, worked as a hairstylist and played softball.
“They put a ball in my hand at a very young age,” McLaughlin said. “They put sports around me. We bowled as a family, played basketball, baseball, tossed the football around. We did everything. My little sister played basketball too, so we would always be outside with the neighborhood kids playing a bunch of different sports.”
McLaughlin gained fame in Los Angeles’ Inland Empire area while playing for the Etiwanda High Eagles in Rancho Cucamonga for longtime coach Dave Kleckner, who was known for his “no stars” system and for guiding future NBA players Darren Collison, Jeff Ayres and Byron Wesley.
“Coach Kleckner taught us how to play the right way, moving the ball in a motion offense,” McLaughlin said. “It was a lot of passing and screening and just trying to make a play for your teammate. It translated well to the next level in college and even beyond. The way he preps young kids to become young men and take the jump to the next stage is pretty good.”
At USC, McLaughlin became just the the third Pac-12 player ever to record more than 600 assists and 1,600 points in a career.
“I had a great time there,” he said of his four years with the Trojans. “Loved it, enjoyed it, met my wife, and we had fun on the court, turning the program around.”
After going undrafted in 2018 following his senior season, McLaughlin played for a year in the G League with Brooklyn’s farm club before spending his first five NBA seasons with Minnesota, a stint that included appearing in 13 playoff games.
Now, he’s on a team fighting for 60 wins and determined to make a deep postseason run.
“He’s an extreme professional,” Fox said of McLaughlin, who entered Monday night’s game against the Heat averaging 11.5 points, 5.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 steals per 36 minutes over 37 games.
“Knowing you’re probably not going to play all the time is probably something that is extremely tough, but he’s been in this league for a long time and he’s always ready,” Fox added.
“He’s just someone who’s reliable and steady and can kind of just fill whatever role is needed,” Kornet said.
And then talk it all over with his dad afterward.
