San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) and San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) converse during the second half of Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals at Target Center in Minneapolis on Sunday, May 10, 2026. The Spurs lost to the Timberwolves 114-109, tying the series at 2-2.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Can the Spurs’ three rim-attacking guards coexist on the court?

That question, once the topic of so much discussion in the NBA, seems laughable now.

De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper head into the Western Conference finals against the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder playing at a level so high that it makes many believe the second-seeded Spurs could advance to their first NBA Finals since 2014 when they beat Miami for the franchise’s fifth title.

“It’s great,” Fox said after the Spurs’ 139-109 thumping of Minnesota on Friday in Game 6 of the conference semifinals. “The way our rotations work, at all times we have two of us out there, and we’re all able to play off of one another. We can all get to the basket. We all make our open shots. We facilitate for each other and other guys on the court. It just adds the dynamic of our team.”

They were nearly unstoppable in Game 6 in Minneapolis, combining for 68 points on 25-of-34 (73.5%) shooting and 19 assists as the Spurs posted the third-highest scoring playoff game in franchise history.

Castle led the way with 32 points on 11 of 16 from the field and 5 of 7 from 3-point range to go with a playoff-best 11 rebounds and six assists. In doing so, he joined Luka Doncic, Tyrese Haliburton, Damian Lillard and Fox as the only players in NBA history to have 200-plus points, 60-plus assists, 50-plus rebounds and more than 20 3-pointers in their first 11 playoff games.

Fox shook off a sore ankle to finish with 21 points on 8 of 10 and 3 of 3 and a team-high nine assists.

Harper came off the bench to contribute 15 points on 6 of 8 from the floor in joining David Robinson, Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker as the only players in franchise history to amass 150-plus points in the playoffs as a rookie.

“They specialize in getting downhill and I don’t think there’s anyone in the league that can stop them one on one getting downhill at all,” Spurs forward Devin Vassell said.

Through the first two rounds, a five-game shredding of Portland followed by a six-game vanquishing of Minnesota, the Spurs’ incredible depth at guard has been their not-so secret weapon.

“It makes it easier because sometimes you play a team and they have one ball handler and we’re able to wear that guy down and it makes it hard for that team,” Fox said. “But with us having three of them, it makes it pretty easy. We can take the pressure off of each other. We can try to take the pressure off of Vic (Wembanyama) as well.”

From the start after the Spurs raised some eyebrows by drafting Harper second overall last June even though they already had players with similar skill sets in Fox and 2024-25 Rookie of the Year Castle, the “Slash Brothers” have worked together for the good of the team. Each player could average 20 points a game elsewhere, and Fox already did just that several times with Sacramento before he came to San Antonio in a blockbuster three-team deal engineered by Spurs general manager Brian Wright in February 2025.

Fox underscored his commitment to team play when he averaged 18.6 points in the regular season after posting norms of 25.0 or better in his final three seasons with the Kings.

“They really don’t care who gets the credit, whose number is called,” Vassell said. "It’s great to be a part of because nobody is selfish, everybody just wants to win. For them to get downhill, they are not only creating for themselves, they are creating for all of us. It’s Steph seeing (who is open in the) corners, Fox being able to kick it out, Dylan.

“I could go on and on about how they get downhill not only themselves but for their teammates, to open things up for Vic on the lob. They open up things for all of us.”

Fox, 28-year-old two-time All-Star, has been the trio’s ringleader, a valued mentor to Castle, 21, and Harper, 20.

“It’s dope and it’s something I don’t take for granted,” Fox said of taking the younger players under his wing. "Having guys who are this talented who have watched me throughout my career and then we get to be in the same locker room, get to be on the court together, it’s something I love. And I want them to feel that success from as early as you can get it in your career because you never know when those things can come back around.

“And for me, it’s just giving them little tidbits here or there because they’re so talented, just giving them a cheat sheet to kind of maneuver throughout the league and a long season. But like I said, man, I try to add what I can to what they can already do and they can already do a lot of things.”

“A lot of things” also includes being strong on the defensive end. That’s especially true of Castle, who is expected to gain a berth on one of the NBA’s all-defensive teams.

“Oh, man, he takes on any matchup,” Fox said. “It could be a big man, it could be a point guard.”

Castle returned the praise, calling Fox “very poised” after the close-out win in Minneapolis.

“He played under control the whole game, didn’t really force any shots,” Castle said. “To have a lead guard, a veteran guard like that on our team that can get to any spot on the court whenever he wants, it’s definitely cool to be alongside him.”

As far the youngest member of the trio, Harper just wants to continue attacking the rim.

“Coach (Mitch Johnson) says the best quality is being relentless,” he said. “We try to put our imprint on the game right out of the gate. (Castle) does a great job of doing that, and when I come in the game, I try to just put that imprint and just be that attack dog Mitch called us.”
