San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) celebrates with San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) during the first half of an NBA basketball game against the New Orleans Pelicans in New Orleans, Monday, Dec. 8, 2025. Harper and Castle, along with teammate De’Aaron Fox, have developed a quick rapport, and the guard trio is already paying dividends for the Spurs.
LAS VEGAS — If there was a Spurs-themed slot machine here in Sin City, it likely would come up with the faces of De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper to signal a jackpot.
The crafty, speedy, downhill guard trio is already offering big payouts for the Spurs, and even bigger returns are expected in the future.
“We’re going to be scary,” Harper said.
In Wednesday night’s 132-119 win in Los Angeles that punched the Spurs’ ticket to Las Vegas for a berth in the NBA Cup semifinals against Oklahoma City at 8 p.m. Saturday, Castle exploded for a season-high 30 points, Fox contributed 20 and Harper chipped in 13. They also combined for 17 rebounds, 12 assists and three steals.
Although the sample size for the three playing together is small since they have had only had two games together due to injuries, the Spurs expect plenty more such outings in the future.
“It’s been great,” forward Harrison Barnes said. “Each of them are different and their games complement each other. They’re all trying to make the right play, investing in the time off the court for that chemistry. So for us as a group, it’s great as we continue to evolve this thing and continue to get healthy, that those three continue to figure out ways to be effective.”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson and his staff, of course, will play a big part in mapping out a strategy for making the most of their similar skill sets. That project has been delayed due to injuries that shelved each player for various stretches before they finally had their first game together last Monday night in a 135-132 win at New Orleans.
“It will be a lot of fun,” Johnson said of conducting what has the potential to be a powerhouse three-man band.
As usual, the Spurs will be patient and won’t skip any steps.
“It’ll be just a combination of allowing time to dictate some of that development and then obviously putting those guys in positions at times, whether it’s with or without the basketball, to be able to make plays or help their teammates to make plays and be ready to play off their teammates,” Johnson said. “And I suspect those guys to have the ball a lot.”
Johnson said it helps that Fox, 27; Castle, 21; and Harper, 19; are unselfish.
“Their commitment and excitement to play with each other is something that makes the job easy in terms of there doesn’t feel like there’s any push-pull effect, or we got to keep that guy happier, this guy happier, looking at how many dribbles or shots or minutes,” Johnson said. “And so it’s just continuing to try to foster, nurture and develop that in a way to have them continue to grow individually and help them find ways to take advantage of things together.”
Castle, for one, is taking a Gregg Popovich-type “come on, it’s just basketball” view to the project.
“It shouldn’t be too hard,” the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year said. “We have great IQ out of us three. Just being able to find space on the floor where we can all operate should be pretty simple.”
Lakers coach JJ Redick believes the Spurs have already found a winning formula.
“They’re running a lot of pick and rolls with Fox,” Redick said. “A lot of pick and rolls with Castle and Harper, and all those pick and rolls lead to drives, to kick outs and catch twos or threes and then more drives.”
Fox, Castle and Harper, who comes off the bench, expect to not just co-exist but to thrive.

San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper and guard Stephon Castle, both sitting out due to injury, talk on the court as their teammates warm up for a game against the Atlanta Hawks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025. Harper and Castle, along with teammate De’Aaron Fox, have developed a quick rapport, and the guard trio is already paying dividends for the Spurs.
“We all trust each other with the ball,” Harper said. “There’s no ego between us three. We all just want to see each other succeed no matter what. If it’s my day, they’re going to give me the ball. If it’s Steph’s day, we’re going to give him the ball. If it’s Fox’s day, we’re going to give him the ball.
“We all have one common goal and that’s winning.”
That was clear in the single-minded way Castle and Harper approached the Cup quarterfinals clash against the star-laden Lakers.
“We had to get to Vegas,” Harper said. “That was the biggest thing in my mind. We got to win this game and get to Vegas.”
Castle, more than anybody else, made it happen, posting his season high for points, matching his season high for rebounds (10) and dishing out six assists, all in just 27 minutes.
“He has a passion and a fire to play this game,” Barnes said of the fourth overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft.
Castle believes the same is true of Harper, who the Spurs selected second overall in June.
“He’s just fearless, touching the paint whenever, finding a shot at will," Castle said after watching the rookie post a season-high 22 points in last Monday’s 135-132 win at New Orleans, including a go-ahead, contested driving layup with 9 seconds left.
That muscular, clutch drive into the lane underscored how Harper is no ordinary rookie.
“Yeah, it’s crazy because he’s played like 10 games,” Johnson said. “He’s got a great feel. He continuously tries to make the right play. He lives in the paint. He’s very skilled, finishes with both hands, has great vision.”
And the best is yet to come for the New Jersey native, his coach said.
“As he continues to see patterns and pictures over time, he’s going to recognize things quicker and more clearer,” Johnson said.
And then there’s Fox, a one-time All-Star in his ninth season who reminds his young proteges the Spurs’ long-range goal goes well beyond taking home the NBA Cup.
“This is just a stepping stone,” Fox said. “What we want to do is win an NBA championship. You have to continue to build toward that, and playing games like this is what helps you.”

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) drives past Memphis Grizzlies wing Jaylen Wells (0) during the first half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025. Fox scored 29 points to help San Antonio beat Memphis 126-119.
Another thing that helps: The three have quickly formed a tight bond.
“Me and Dylan, we hang out a lot off the court,” Castle said. “When you like your teammates off the court, it’s a lot easier to play with them.”
Given how close they are in age, it’s no surprise Castle and Harper have clicked. Fox is the “unc” of the group, but the fit has been smooth with him as well.
“Off the court, they’re so young, super young-minded, but they’re just great guys to be around,” Fox said.
That’s also true on the court — where it matters most.
“They’re easy guys to play off of because they are so unselfish and they have the ability to create for themselves, create for others,” Fox said. “Same with me. It makes it easy to play off guys like that.”
