Spurs star Victor Wembanyama had somebody special waiting for him at the airport when the team charter landed in San Antonio on Monday after the Game 4 loss at Minnesota.
Wembanyama didn’t disclose the details of his conversation with Gregg Popovich, but it was clear the Hall of Fame coach’s gesture touched him.
“He maybe wanted to make a statement or make his talking even more impactful by being there,” Wembanyama said.
Popovich met with the MVP finalist and unanimous NBA Defensive Player of the Year after he had been ejected in the second quarter Sunday for his Flagrant 2 foul elbow to the neck of Timberwolves center Naz Reid.

A video of Popovich talking to Wembanyama shot by San Antonio CBS affiliate KENS-5 went viral on social media Tuesday. Wembanyama was asked about it after he had 27 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three blocks in a 126-97 victory over the Timberwolves on Tuesday night in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals.
“He gives feedback and talks to us regularly through our (playoff) series, throughout games. So as always, when he speaks, everybody listens,” Wembanyama, 22, said of Popovich, 77.
