What the Spurs had to say after bouncing back with Game 2 rout

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) hugs teammates San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant (11) and San Antonio Spurs center Bismack Biyombo (18) while talking to reporters after their Game 2 win of the Western Conference semifinals at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The Spurs rolled past the Timberwolves 133-95 to even the series at 1-1.
After San Antonio handed Minnesota a 38-point rout in Game 2, Spurs forward Julian Champagnie felt confident in agreeing that the team had sent a message to the rest of the NBA.
“I think it just shows that we’re a serious team,” Champagnie said.
If any doubts had surfaced following the Spurs’ Game 1 loss, San Antonio did its best to put them to bed, cruising to a 133-95 win against Minnesota to level the series on Wednesday in the Frost Bank Center.

Here’s what the Spurs had to say about the blowout:
Victor Wembanyama
San Antonio was dominant on defense for stretches of Wednesday’s game, holding Minnesota to 39.8% shooting. As always, Wembanyama was at the center of the effort on that end of the floor.
“I love how everyone had everybody’s back,” Wembanyama said. “Tonight looked like a system that worked.”

Mitch Johnson
After the second-seeded Spurs gave away home-court advantage with a loss to the sixth-seeded Timberwolves in Monday’s opener, Johnson credited San Antonio for bouncing back with tenacity.
“Tonight was enhanced in that regard,” Johnson said. “I thought the guys did a good job of playing with that appropriate urgency.”

Julian Champagnie
Shaking off his missed shot at the buzzer that could have flipped a 104-102 loss in Game 1, Champagnie said the Spurs patched up issues on both ends of the floor.
“Great response from us. We let things go in the first game,” Champagnie said. “We had a lot to clean up on and a lot of solutions to be better. I thought we came out tonight and executed.”

De’Aaron Fox
Bouncing back with 16 efficient points after posting 10 points with six turnovers in Game 1, Fox said one of the biggest keys was defense, as San Antonio followed through on many of the same points that were planned for the series opener.
“We didn’t make super adjustments. That’s what we wanted to do in the first game,” Fox said. “We wanted to be physical, try to get deflections, try to speed them up, and we did a better job at that this game.”

Stephon Castle
Both teams have played with a high level of physicality through the first two games of the series, and few have embodied that more than Castle.
Tempers reached a boiling point between Castle and Minnesota’s Bones Hyland during the third quarter Wednesday, with the two exchanging shoves as the teams lined up for a jump ball. Castle was assessed a loose ball foul for his initial push, while Hyland earned a technical for his retaliation.
“I didn’t get a tech, so I think I did enough to send a message,” Castle said. “I don’t think there’s anything soft about our team, so when they try to do stuff like that on the court, if we don’t respond, it feels like they’re trying to punk us.”
