What the Spurs had to say after dropping Game 1 to Minnesota

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) reacts after falling to the ground following a foul during the second half of Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, May 4, 2026. The Spurs fell 104-102 to the Timberwolves.
As Minnesota’s Naz Reid went sailing by toward the San Antonio bench, Spurs forward Julian Champagnie took one dribble to his left and unleashed a potential game-winning 3-pointer.
San Antonio trailed by six points with less than a minute remaining before baskets by Victor Wembanyama and Dylan Harper created an opening for a comeback in the final seconds. But Champagnie’s 3-pointer clanged off the front of the rim, and Minnesota held on for a 104-102 win in Game 1 of a second-round playoff series Monday in the Frost Bank Center.
“It felt pretty solid. Yeah, that’s all I got for you. It felt pretty solid,” Champagnie said. “Missed the shot. On to the next one.”

Here’s what the Spurs had to say following the loss:
Dylan Harper
After Minnesota’s Julius Randle missed a midrange jumper with less than 10 seconds to play, Harper grabbed the rebound, threw a pass to Wembanyama, and then received a return pass with time winding down.
Harper dribbled into the frontcourt and dished to Champagnie to set up the final look.
“We got a great shot. I’m taking that shot 10 out of 10 times,” Harper said. “The best shooter on the team wide open? You can’t ask for a better shot. So we just have to live with it. Sometimes it’s going to go in, sometimes it’s not going to go in.”

De’Aaron Fox
One of San Antonio’s primary ball handlers, Fox said he was fine with the outcome after coach Mitch Johnson signaled for the team to play on rather than spending a timeout to set up a play.
Champagnie set a Spurs record with 195 made 3-pointers this season, knocking down 38.1% from beyond the arc.
“I think we got probably the best shot. If we call timeout, obviously down two, we’re probably going to get a heavily contested jumper from Vic or myself with their better defenders on us,” Fox said. “Ju got a fly-by, wide-open 3, from the guy who owns the record for most 3s in a season for the Spurs. We got a great shot that just didn’t go down.”

Mitch Johnson
The Spurs coach credited Champagnie for playing with a sense of urgency down the stretch, as he grabbed three offensive rebounds and converted two putback layups during the final two minutes.
“On the last play, we got a rebound and it felt like they weren’t organized, and there was enough time for us to push the ball and get a look,” Johnson said. “We didn’t push it right away, so it got to be that death knock time, where you have to call timeout or not. Dylan did a good job pushing the ball, kicked it ahead to Julian. Julian had a fly by, got a 3-pointer in rhythm, had no problem with the shot. I thought it was a great shot. I hope he shoots it every time.”

San Antonio was close down the stretch despite the offensive struggles of the team’s two leading scorers during the regular season. Wembanyama finished with 11 points on 5-of-17 shooting, including 0 for 8 from 3-point range, while Fox scored 10 points on 5-of-14 shooting with six turnovers.
"I have no concern over De’Aaron Fox or Victor Wembanyama’s box score,” Johnson said. “They’ll be better, and we’ll be better for them.”

Victor Wembanyama
On a night he set an NBA playoff record with 12 blocks, Wembanyama was focused on what he can do better offensively.
“Start with making some shots,” Wembanyama said. “I feel like knowing how to use my energy. Obviously, I used a lot of it on one side of the court. … Offensively, I used too much on things that didn’t really help our team, so that’s on me.”
