pic.twitter.com/qOrt7cYV2N

pic.twitter.com/zMQvxowEm1

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) May 5, 2026

3 Takeaways as Spurs spoil Wembanyama’s record-setting night in Game 1

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) walks on the court during the first half of Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, May 4, 2026. The Spurs fell 104-102 to the Timberwolves.

In a frenzy, the ball found Julian Champagnie on the right arc Monday as the entire Frost Bank Center crowd stood with the clock streaming toward triple zeroes.

The Spurs were behind by two in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals and Champagnie had a chance to play the hero.

In the Hollywood version of this moment, what happened next was not supposed to happen.

“Missed a shot,” Champagnie said. “On to the next.”

Minnesota survived Champagnie’s last-second misfire to steal a 104-102 victory, putting the Spurs into a 1-0 hole in the series heading to Game 2 on Wednesday.

Julius Randle led the Timberwolves with 21 points and 10 rebounds, but it was the surprise return of All-Star guard Anthony Edwards that gave Minnesota the biggest lift.

Edwards had been out since Game 4 of Minnesota’s first-round series against Denver with a bone bruise in his left knee. The Wolves got on the plane from Minneapolis on Sunday afternoon not thinking Edwards was possible for Game 1.

“We felt it would be mid-series,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said. “At best case scenario, Game 2.”

Instead, Edwards was a late addition to the Wolves’ active list. He came off the bench for the third time in his career and first time in a playoff game.

In a game that featured three lead changes and five ties in the fourth quarter alone, Edwards scored 11 of his 18 points in the final frame to key the Timberwolves’ final surge.

The Spurs squandered a massive defensive outing from Victor Wembanyama, who set an NBA playoff record with 12 blocked shots. He also grabbed 15 rebounds and scored 11 points to log the Spurs’ first postseason triple-double since Tim Duncan in 2008.

As good as he was defensively, Wembanyama could not get untracked against the sturdy Minnesota defense. He finished 5 of 17 from the field.

De’Aaron Fox, the Spurs’ second-leading scorer on average, was 5 of 14 with six turnovers. Despite it all, the Spurs had a chance, rallying from down nine to pull within two on Dylan Harper’s run-out dunk with 30.9 seconds left.

The Spurs forced a Randle miss on the other end, leading to a fast break that put the ball in the hands of one of the top 3-point shooters in club history.

“Best shooter on the team wide open,” Harper said. “I mean, you can’t ask for a better shot.”

Champagnie’s shot at Spurs postseason glory missed. Now the Spurs head into a desperate Game 2 on Wednesday hoping to salvage a split of the opening two home games of the series.

Here are three takeaways from Monday’s defeat:

1. Wasting Wemby’s historic night

It took less than a minute into Game 1 to surmise that Wembanyama was in for a special night.

In the first 40 seconds, he blocked shots from Minnesota’s Terrence Shannon Jr – not once, but twice. A few possessions later, Wembanyama got Rudy Gobert.

By halftime, Wembanyama had registered seven blocks, matching David Robinson’s franchise playoff record for a half.

Before the third quarter was over, Wembanyama had surpassed Tim Duncan’s franchise record of nine.

Spurs center Victor Wembanyama on what he can do better offensively: “Start with making some shots. I feel like knowing how to use my energy. Obviously, I used a lot of it on one side of the court. … Offensively, I used too much on things that didn’t really help our team.” pic.twitter.com/zMQvxowEm1

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) May 5, 2026

The NBA record of 10, most recently set by Andrew Bynum in 2012 but also held by Mark Eaton and Hakeem Olajuwon, was next to fall.

All of it went for naught because the Spurs couldn’t score. That includes Wembanyama himself.

The points part of the triple-double equation was the last to click into place for Wembanyama. He got to double digits on a driving dunk to cut Minnesota’s lead to 104-100 with 43.6 seconds to go.

The entire night was an offensive slog for both teams. In the end, the Timberwolves had just enough to survive Wembanyama’s assault on the NBA record books.

2. One more 3-pointer would have done it

It is almost fitting the game ended with the Spurs’ best 3-point shooter missing an open look.

It was more or less the story of the game for them.

The Spurs were 10 of 36 from the 3-point line, for a paltry 27.8%. Had they shot even 30%, they would have won the game.

Wembanyama and Fox were the Spurs’ biggest offenders when it came to chipping the paint off the rims from beyond the arc. They combined to go 0 of 12 from 3-point range.

The Spurs’ difficult night from deep comes after they were one of the hottest 3-point teams in the first round, hitting 39.2% against Portland.

This is a new series, but the concept is the same.

The Timberwolves’ rugged defenders makes it difficult for opponents to get much going toward the paint. As the series moves forward, the Spurs are going to have to knock down more open 3-point attempts to keep Minnesota honest.

3. Edwards will only get healthier

Edwards subbed in for Mike Conley with 6:53 remaining in the first quarter. His first few trips up and down the court were nondescript.

With 1:44 left in the frame, Edwards spun out of a double-team and hit a baseline jumper. On the Wolves’ next trip, he made a step-back 3-pointer over Keldon Johnson, then promptly announced his return to the playoffs.

“I’m back, baby!” he barked at Johnson.

The scary part for the Spurs? As good as Edwards was Monday, converting 8 of 13 attempts and dragging Minnesota across the finish line in the fourth quarter, he wasn’t anywhere near the height of his powers.

Edwards will only get healthier as the series progresses.

That bodes well for the Timberwolves. Not so much for the Spurs.
