Appearing dazed, Wembanyama remained on the court for several moments while being checked on by his teammates and athletic trainer Will Sevening.
Wembanyama was diagnosed with a concussion before leaving the Frost Bank Center, starting the clock on the NBA’s concussion protocol and casting doubt on the availability of the Spurs’ best player for the remainder of his first Western Conference playoff series.

That play was considered unsportsmanlike enough that the NBA later added a rule designating actions like it a flagrant foul going forward.
In contrast, Holiday made minimal contact with a stumbling Wembanyama on Tuesday.
“I didn’t think I touched him, but I don’t really know,” said Holiday, a 35-year-old two-time All-Star not generally known for dirty play. “After they called the foul, I went to complain to the ref. I didn’t really see (Wembanyama fall)."
No matter Holiday’s intent, the play has nevertheless swung the balance of the series.
In accordance with the league’s concussion protocol, the soonest Wembanyama can be re-evaluated is 48 hours after his diagnosis.
That would be Thursday night, at about the time the Spurs’ team plane is scheduled to arrive in Portland ahead of Game 3 on Friday.
In order to be cleared to return, Wembanyama must pass a series of benchmark medical tests overseen by the Spurs’ doctors in consultation with a league-appointed protocol director.
“Obviously we don’t know how long he’s going to be out,” Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox said. “But we’ve got to be ready to play without him.”
Per NBA injury tracking data, the average length of time for a player to spend in concussion protocol is a week to 10 days.
Even the most optimistic end of that spectrum would have Wembanyama missing Games 3 and 4. The most pessimistic would have Wembanyama out for Games 5 and 6 as well.
As the series shifts to Portland, here is the state of play for the suddenly short-handed Spurs: They are locked in a dead-heat with the scrappy, seventh-seeded Trail Blazers, likely needing to win at least one game on the road without their best player to regain home-court advantage.
“We all got to step up,” Spurs forward Devin Vassell said. "We know what Vic brings to the table and we’ve played without him a couple of games this year. That’s huge void to fill.”
Portland players say they are rooting for Wembanyama’s swift recovery.
“Hoping he’s good, because as a competitor you don’t want one of the (other) team’s better players to get hurt,” said Blazers guard Scoot Henderson, whose 31 points powered Portland’s victory. “You want to beat them fully healthy.”
The Spurs went 12-6 with Wembanyama sidelined during the regular season, including 2-1 against Portland.
As the Spurs learned Tuesday, the regular-season and postseason are two different basketball animals. Even with Wembanyama out of the game, the Spurs grabbed a 14-point lead with 8 ½ minutes remaining Tuesday, and seemed on the way to going up 2-0 in the series.
From there, the whole ball of twine came unraveled in a bevy of missed shots and bogged-down offensive possessions as Portland closed the game on a 27-10 run.
“They’ve got a lot of good guards who are physical on the ball,” Vassell said. “So late game execution, we just got to be better.”
Indicative of the Spurs’ bad luck Tuesday, it was Holiday who scored the go-ahead basket for Portland when he put back a Robert Williams airball with 2:07 to go.
Vassell had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but his corner 3-pointer — expertly contested by the Blazers’ Matisse Thybulle — rimmed out.
If the Spurs wind up losing the series, those final 8 ½ minutes of Game 2 will prove haunting.
Had the Spurs held on, they would have headed to Portland with a 2-0 lead and some margin for error.
Instead, they are headed northwest with the series in a dead heat and awaiting the results of concussion tests.
As of Wednesday morning, Wemby Watch was officially on in San Antonio.
“We’re hoping for the best,” Keldon Johnson said.
Spurs fans everywhere know the feeling.
