What Victor Wembanyama, other Spurs thought about the Fiesta T-shirts

Former San Antonio Spurs players David Robinson, left, and Tim Duncan watch the fourth quarter of Game 1 of a first-round NBA playoff series between the Spurs and the Portland Trail Blazers at Frost Bank Center on Sunday, April 19, 2026, in San Antonio. The Spurs won 111-98.

The Frost Bank Center was a playoff Fiesta fortress for the Spurs on Sunday night.

And Victor Wembanyama and his teammates loved it.

The French star raved about how the fans embraced the club’s Fiesta-colored T-shirt giveaway during the 111-98 win over Portland in Game 1 of a first-round Western Conference series.

“It’s great to see this many people wear their shirts,” Wembanyama said after pumping in 35 points in 33 minutes before the brightly adorned sellout crowd of 19,372.

“I love the animation (on the video boards) when they say, ‘Wear your shirt.’ Yeah, you should absolutely wear your shirt if you’re coming to the game. The first time I stepped on the court for warmups, I felt the atmosphere was different. Everybody’s ready. I mean, the fans were ready. It’s probably the most excited I’ve seen the arena this year."

Even franchise legends David Robinson and Tim Duncan donned the festive gear.

“Everybody put them on and everybody got into it,” said Spurs forward Julian Champagnie, who finished with six points, five rebounds, a team-high three steals and one block, which came in the third quarter against 7-foot-3 Donovan Clingan.

“It was pretty cool seeing them (the fans). They were doing the wave at one point. … It was a good vibe.”

Center Luke Kornet agreed.

“As far as T-shirt giveaways in the playoffs that I’ve seen, that might be number one,” said Kornet, who helped Boston win an NBA title in 2024.

“In college and stuff, a lot of places do that, like Tennessee football use to checker the stadium and things like that. Vanderbilt (his alma mater) people would not be happy with me talking about this. But it was definitely really cool and I feel like everyone had the energy and the whole city of San Antonio was pretty excited to be back in the playoffs.”

Fiesta and the Spurs have gone hand-in-hand ever since the team’s days in the American Basketball Association when players used to show up for events like a Night in Old San Antonio and mingle with the fans.

“I’ve heard about Fiesta and the playoffs and the city of San Antonio for a long time,” said Spurs coach Mitch Johnson in a reference to the six-year playoff drought that ended this year. “Never experienced it quite firsthand just as I have at the start of this weekend. It’s a real thing.”

The Spurs will have another T-shirt giveaway for Game 2 on Tuesday night, but it won’t be Fiesta themed, a team spokesperson said.
