Victor Wembanyama ‘super excited’ about Spurs’ playoff opener

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Victor Wembanyama is ready for the Frost Bank Center to rock like he’s never seen it before after the Spurs clinched homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs with Wednesday night’s 123-98 dunk-filled romp over injury-depleted, undersized Memphis.

“I can imagine the Baseline Bums and the Jackals being there, for sure,” a smiling Wembanyama said after being asked if he could envision what the arena will be like for Game 1. "I can also see maybe some French people because the few times they’ve been there they’ve really brought that energy in connecting with the Jackals.

“I can only imagine, but I’m super excited. I’m sure they’re going to exceed my expectations.”

The Spurs announced immediately after the game that first-round playoff tickets would go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. April 2 on Spurs Ticketmaster.

Led by Wembanyama’s 19 points on 8 of 15 from the field, 15 rebounds and seven blocks in just 27 minutes, the Spurs (55-18) won their seventh in a row and pulled within two games of Oklahoma City (57-16) for the lead in the Western Conference with nine games left after Boston ended the Thunder’s 12-game winning streak with a 119-109 win Wednesday night.

The Spurs have already clinched the No. 3 seed in the West. Their magic number to clinch the No. 2 seed is one, and they play at lottery-bound Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson is also picturing a raucous arena for the Spurs’ first home playoff game since they beat Denver 120-103 on April 25, 2019, to force a Game 7 in a first-round series the Nuggets ended up winning.

“I would expect it to be loud with a lot of excitement, enthusiasm,” Johnson said. “But it’s still a little bit away, so hopefully we can continue to get better and make some improvements in a lot of areas.”

In addition to clinching homecourt advantage, the win also made the Spurs the first team since the 2007-2008 Boston Celtics to notch 55 victories the year after having less than 35 wins the season before.

The Spurs are an NBA-best 23-2 since the start of February.

With all the wins and achievements they keep stacking up, the Spurs have been a buoyant bunch for weeks. That was especially true in the visitors locker room at FedExForum, which was filled with laughter, friendly arguments and high jinks.

“It’s just the chemistry of this team,” said Devin Vassell, who enjoyed a strong all-around night with 19 points on 7 of 10 from the field and 4 of 6 from 3-point territory, along with seven rebounds and four assists.

“Everybody’s excited for each other,” he continued. “We’re all doing something that we all never have done. So super exciting. It’s a great time. And we all mess with each other off the court too. We all go to dinner, we all talk to each other. It’s all good vibes.”

The Spurs dominated from their opening possession Wednesday, which ended with Vassell feeding Wembanyama for an easy lob dunk. They would eventually enjoy a 39-point lead in a game filled with highlight-reel dunks, including a ferocious slam by Wembanyama over GG Jackson II just seconds after Jackson dunked over him.

“I knew it was coming once he crossed the 3-point line,” said Spurs guard Stephon Castle, who finished with 15 points and nine assists and had a vicious dunk of his own, said of Wembanyama’s revenge slam.

Memphis suffered its fourth loss in a row in falling to 24-48. The Grizzlies were without 10 players after they announced Tuesday that starters Ja Morant and Zach Edey and key reserve Brandon Clarke were done for the season due to injuries.

That left the 6-foot-9 Jackson as the tallest starter for Memphis, but Wembanyama and his teammates showed no mercy, winning the rebounding battle 59-33 and outscoring the Grizzlies 56-34 in the paint.

Two days after he argued that he should be the league MVP primarily because of his defensive excellence, Wembanyama had five-plus blocks for the third consecutive game, tying a career high.

“Nobody has the type of impact that he does on that end,” Castle said. “I think he had like what, seven blocks tonight, eight blocks tonight? Nobody in the league is doing what he’s doing and we’re winning.”

And having a lot of fun, which they hope to continue in the playoffs at the Frost Bank Center, where they are 28-7 this season, the second-best home mark in the league behind Oklahoma City’s 29-6 showing.

“The last two, three months, I feel like we’ve been playing our best basketball,” Castle said. “And I think we all enjoy just being around each other on and off the court. It makes playing the game a lot easier.”
