Why Victor Wembanyama is still the official blocks leader despite not reaching threshold

NBA: San Antonio Spurs at Utah Jazz

Stat leaders are required to play in 70% of their games, but there is an exception in the NBA rule book.

A lot was lost when Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the 2024-25 season during the All-Star break due to deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder, and it wasn’t just potential wins for a Spurs team that had postseason aspirations. With just 46 games played, he was deemed ineligible for awards such Defensive Player of the Year (which by all accounts he would have won had he qualified), as well as All-NBA and All-Defensive teams because he did not meet 65-game threshold.

However, there is one title he will be able keep thanks to an exception in the NBA rule book. When it comes to being called a stat leader for a season, the requirements are slightly more lenient: instead of 65 games, a player must participate in 70% of a team’s games, so 58 games in an 82-game season, for most total-based stats. (Some stats, such as shooting percentages and ratios, require a minimum number of attempts.) Of course, Wemby did not reach 58 games either, but there is an exemption that allows him to still qualify.

On the NBA’s stat minimum requirements page, you can see what the thresholds are. (For example, despite hitting 92.4% of his free throws, 3% more than Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chris Paul will not qualify as the leader because he only had 94 attempts, but 125 makes is required.) Beneath all that, there is an exception that allows players who don’t meet the thresholds to still qualify:

The only exception to this rule will be if, at the end of the season, the player would have led the league in the category had he played the required number of games with his current category total. For example, if Player A played 56 games and scored 1,590 points (28.4 ppg), Player A could still qualify for the league lead if his average (27.4) with that same point total (1,590) over 58 games was higher than any other player. A past example: Myles Turner recorded 159 blocks in 47 games (3.38 bpg) in a 72-game season in 2020-21, when the games played qualifier was 51. Turner would have still led the league in blocks because his average with 51 games (3.12 bpg) would have been greater than the 2.68 bpg of Rudy Gobert, the leader among players who met the 51-game qualifier.

No matter which way you slice it, Wemby would have led the league in blocks if he had played in 58 games because, well, he did anyways. Despite only playing in 46 games, Wemby still led the entire NBA in total blocks with 176 — 28 more than runner-up Brook Lopez, who had 148 blocks in 80 games played. When adjusted to 58 games played (so 176 divided by 58), Wemby would have still averaged just over 3 blocks per game, well ahead of runner-up Walker Kesler’s 2.4 in 58 games, meaning Wemby qualifies for blocks leader under this exception. (It’s worth nothing that one stat he does not qualify for is blocks per 48 min since that requires a minimum of 2,000 minutes played, and there are no exceptions.)

If you need proof that these exceptions are being applied to Wemby, you can click on the links above to see than the league does have him as the league leader in total blocks and blocks per game, but he his nowhere to be found in blocks per 48 minutes.

So, there you have it. Wemby may have been robbed of at least two potential resume-building awards in DPOY and the All-Defense team (both of which matter towards his contract extension), but at least he gets to keep the title of Block King this season, and he’ll be back for the other two for many seasons to come. Whoever wins DPOY this year should covet it dearly, because it may not be available for a while — at least not until voter fatigue sets in.
