Spurs to face Portland Trail Blazers in first round of playoffs

San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) shoots over Portland Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija (8) during an NBA game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, April 8, 2026. The Spurs are set to face the Trail Blazers in the first round of the playoffs. Game 1 is Sunday at the Frost Bank Center.
It took 82 games and nearly 48 more minutes, but the Spurs finally know the identity of their first playoff opponent in seven years.
Hello, Portland Trail Blazers.
The Blazers went to Phoenix on Tuesday night and won a wild and wooly Western Conference play-in game 114-110, earning the No. 7 seed and earning a first-round date with the second-seeded Spurs.
Game 1 is scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday at the Frost Bank Center.
All-Star guard Deni Advija — who is destined to spend the next week and a half as Public Enemy No. 1 in San Antonio — scored 41 points to lead Portland to a frenetic comeback victory.
With 6½ minutes remaining, the Blazers trailed by 11 points. With 3½ minutes to go, they were down by eight.
Portland went ahead 107-106 on a Jeremi Grant 3-pointer with 1:54 to play. The Blazers wouldn’t stay there.
There would be three more lead changes before Advija put the Blazers back on top 112-110 on a bucket-and-foul with 16.1 seconds to go. Jalen Green missed a 3-pointer on the other end, giving rise to a run-out dunk from Grant to put the finishing touches on Portland’s night.

Portland Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija, left, scores and is fouled by Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks (3) during the second half of an NBA play-in tournament basketball game, Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in Phoenix. Avdija scored 41 points to help Portland clinch the No. 7 seed and set up a first-round playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs.
Phoenix will face the winner of Wednesday’s play-in game between Golden State and the Los Angeles Clippers for the No. 8 seed.
Portland’s victory sets up an intriguing first-round series in San Antonio, where superstar Victor Wembanyama is primed to make his playoff debut.
“They’re a great team, very talented,” Advija said on the Prime Video postgame show Tuesday. “They’re young, too, so they don’t have a lot of playoff experience as well. It’s going to be a fight.”
The 62-20 Spurs are making their first playoff appearance since 2019, when they dropped a seven-game series against a Denver team on the rise. Coached by former Spurs big man Tiago Splitter, the Blazers (42-40) are set for their first postseason trip since 2021, when they also lost to the Nuggets in the first round.
San Antonio won the regular season series over Portland 2-1, including a 112-101 Spurs home victory on April 8.
Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Frost Bank Center. The series shifts to Portland for Game 3 on April 24 and Game 4 on April 26.
The rest of the series remains TBD.
