DENVER – Over the past two months, Victor Wembanyama has surged toward the top of the NBA Most Valuable Player rankings, turning in a slew of dominating two-way performances that have powered the Spurs to the brink of their first 60-win season in nearly a decade.
It might not be enough to keep Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from lifting his second consecutive Michael Jordan trophy later this spring.
That is according to the third and final MVP straw poll conducted by ESPN and released Friday.
Wembanyama has surged to second place in the poll on the heels of a massive March in which he averaged 26.8 points, 12 rebounds and 3.7 blocks. The Spurs, meanwhile, have won 27 of their past 29 games dating to Feb. 1.
None of that appears to have shaken Gilgeous-Alexander’s status as the frontrunner in the race.
Out of 100 voters ESPN surveyed, 88 placed Gilgeous-Alexander at the top of their ballot. Eight tabbed Wembanyana.
Gilgeous-Alexander totaled 958 points in the poll, based on the ton the number of first, second, third, fourth and fifth-place votes. Wembanyama ran a distant second with 644.
Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 31.5 points for a 61-16 OKC team likely to finish with the NBA’s top record for the second season in a row.
Denver’s Nikola Jokic was third with 500 points, including three first-place votes.
Wembanyama’s season-long climb into the MVP conversation has been steady. He was eighth in ESPN’s first straw poll, conducted in December and fourth in the February edition.
At age 22, Wembanyama is gunning to become the youngest MVP since Chicago’s Derrick Rose in 2011. Considered the odds-on favorite to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors, Wembanyama is also vying to to become the fifth player in NBA history to win both awards in the same season.
When it comes to the MVP portion of that equation, Wembanyama seems to be facing an uphill climb.
It is fair to say this year’s MVP hunt is shaping up to be a two-man race, with Gilgeous-Alexander still the heavy favorite.
