The Spurs will be without league MVP candidate Victor Wembanyama when they face the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night in Inglewood, Calif.
The Spurs ruled the two-time All-Star out due to what they are calling ankle injury management.
It’s the second game of the final back-to-back of the season, so the move isn’t that surprising.
Wembanyama must play in three of the team’s remaining five games after Thursday’s outing to remain eligible for regular season awards by satisfying the league’s 65-game rule. In addition to MVP, he’s considered a lock to win defensive player of the year and to land a spot on one of the All-NBA teams.
The Spurs play at Denver on Saturday afternoon before finishing the regular season with a four-game homestand in which they will host Philadelphia, Portland, Dallas and Denver before the start of the playoffs.
Wembanyama finished with 41 points and 18 rebounds in Wednesday night’s 127-113 win at injury-depleted Golden State to become the first player in franchise history to record consecutive 40-point, 15-rebound games. He also had three blocks against the Warriors as the Spurs improved to 58-18.
Luke Kornet is expected to start in place of Wembanyama after sitting out Wednesday’s game to rest a sore knee.
