MILWAUKEE — Indiana coach Rick Carlisle noted after a recent plastering his team suffered at the hands of the Spurs that Victor Wembanyama and Co. aren’t just beating opponents but “mowing them down.”
That’s certainly been true during a three-game road trip that ended Saturday with a 127-95 rout of injury-depleted Milwaukee.
Stephon Castle had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for his team-best fourth triple-double of the season, Victor Wembanyama finished with 23 points, 15 rebounds and six assists, and the Spurs clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with their eighth win in a row, meaning they will have home court for at least the first two rounds of the playoffs.
The Spurs (56-18) pulled within two games of Oklahoma City in the race for home-court advantage throughout. The idle Thunder (58-16) host New York on Sunday with eight games to go and the Spurs holding the tiebreaker after winning the season series 4-1.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was asked how much the Spurs are thinking about catching Oklahoma City.
“Not much because they don’t lose very often,” Johnson said. “We don’t play them again, so there’s nothing that we can do other than control these games that are right in front of us and just trying to keep getting better and better. Time will tell what seed we are and who we play and the (playoff) schedule will be unfolded as the season ends up. But, yeah, we just got to try to keep getting better.”

The Spurs are 32-9 since Jan. 1 and 24-2 since the start of February. They completed this next-to-last road trip of the season with an average margin of victory of 27.3 points after also trouncing Miami and injury-ravaged Memphis.
The Spurs are the first team in NBA history to win four consecutive road games by 25-plus points.
“I keep saying it, but the league’s in trouble,” Spurs forward Devin Vassell said. “We got a lot of young talent that is really good.”
The Spurs’ biggest lead against Milwaukee was 38 points. They are 27-1 this season when leading by 20 or more.
Saturday’s game marked the fourth in a row that the Spurs have led by at least 27.
The Spurs finished with seven scorers in double-figures. Vassell and Keldon Johnson had 16 each, Dylan Harper had 14, De’Aaron Fox 12 and Julian Champagnie 11.
Gary Trent Jr.'s 18 points led the Bucks, who fell to 29-44 with their third consecutive loss and were eliminated from playoff contention. Milwaukee, which has lost nine of their last 11, were without several key players, including Giannis Antetokounmpo, who missed a sixth straight game with a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise.
Here’s are three takeaways from the final game of a three-game road trip that left the Spurs 27-11 away from the Frost Bank Center, where they will host Chicago on Monday night:
1. Many more triple-doubles in store for Castle
With his fourth triple-double of the season, the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year moved into the top five in franchise history in that category.
Dejounte Murray leads with 17. David Robinson (14), Alvin Robertson (eight) and Johnny Moore (six) are next on the chart.
Castle is tied for fifth along with Wembanyama and Tim Duncan, with all of his career triple-doubles coming this season.
Only 21, Castle will climb that ladder quickly.
2. Defense delivers — again
Doc Rivers said before the game defense is what the Spurs “hang their hat on.”
On cue, they held the injury-riddled Bucks to just 45 points in the first half on their way to a 22-point lead into the break.
The first-half low for a Spurs foe this season is 42.
Beyond having the leading candidate for defensive player of the year in Wembanyama, the Spurs are outstanding on the perimeter, Rivers said.
“All their guards and wings defend,” he said.
With the win over Milwaukee, the Spurs, who entered the game ranked third in the league in defensive rating at 111.2, improved to 10-0 this season when holding opponents to under 100 points.

3. Rivers sees unselfish, ‘beautiful’ Spurs
A big factor in the Spurs’ success is how well they play together. Rivers cited that as one of the reasons he thinks their lack of playoff experience won’t be a factor in the upcoming postseason.
“When you watch them play, there’s no agendas,” he said. “And that’s really unusual for a young team because most really young teams, the reason they lose is everybody’s trying to show they’re the man. And it seems like everybody fits in with them.”
Of course, there’s no argument as to who The Man is on the Spurs. But Rivers is right: Wembanyama and Co. are sharing the ball in “The Beautiful Game” manner reminiscent of the 2013-14 Spurs championship team.
“For that, Mitch Johnson also deserves credit,” Rivers said.
On Saturday, the Spurs finished with 35 assists after entering the game ranked 10th in the league with an average of 28.7 per game.
“They’re beautiful. They had a possession the other night where the ball moved around the horn. I think back, forth, back, forth. And I want to say Harper made the three,” Rivers said. “It was coaching beauty. It really was. It was awesome.”
