MILWAUKEE — Indiana coach Rick Carlisle noted after a recent 15-point plastering the Pacers suffered at the hands of the Spurs that Victor Wembanyama and Co. aren’t just beating opponents but “mowing them down.”

That certainly was the case during a dominant three-game road trip the Spurs ended Saturday with a 127-95 rout of injury-depleted Milwaukee. In addition to slamming the Bucks, the Spurs trounced Miami and injury-ravaged Memphis for an average margin of victory of 27.3 points.

Stephon Castle had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for his fourth triple-double of the season, Victor Wembanyama finished with 23 points, 15 rebounds and six assists, and the Spurs clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with their eighth win in a row, meaning they will have home court for at least the first two rounds of the playoffs.

The Spurs (56-18) also pulled within two games of idle Oklahoma City in the race for home-court advantage throughout the postseason. The Thunder (58-16) hosted New York on Sunday with eight games to go and the Spurs holding the tiebreaker after winning the season series, 4-1.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was asked how much the Spurs, who are 24-2 since the start of February, are thinking about catching Oklahoma City.

“Not much because they don’t lose very often,” Johnson said. “We don’t play them again, so there’s nothing we can do other than control these games that are right in front of us and just trying to keep getting better and better. Time will tell what seed we are and who we play and the schedule. But, yeah, we just got to try to keep getting better.”

While Wembanyama answered “of course” when asked if the Spurs are eyeing the top spot, he also echoed Johnson’s comments.

“The main thing for us is taking every game the same way,” he said. “We’re going to see how it goes down the wire up to the end of the season.”

Said Castle, “We’re just trying to have some momentum going into the playoffs. Obviously, it’s possible for us (to overtake Oklahoma City), but we are just trying to focus on us, take it game by game. I feel like we’ve been doing that, and we’ve been slowly closing the gap.”

The Spurs will host the Chicago Bulls (29-45) Monday night before hitting the road again for three games out west that will end their road travels for the regular season.

With their pounding of the Bucks, the Spurs became the first team in NBA history to win four consecutive road games by 25-plus points, dating back to a 132-104 win over Sacramento on March 17, per ESPN.

“I keep saying it, but the league’s in trouble,” Spurs forward Devin Vassell said. “We got a lot of young talent that is really good.”

Bucks coach Doc Rivers agrees. Even before the Spurs eliminated Milwaukee (29-44) from playoff contention, Rivers dismissed the notion that the Spurs’ lack of playoff experience — six of their top seven scorers have never been to the postseason — would hold them back from a deep run this season.

“I don’t think it’s going to be a factor,” Rivers said. “I’m sure there’ll be a game maybe (where it might come to bear), but they seem like they’re an extremely mature group of guys. Wemby has come off as extremely mature. … When you watch them play, there’s no agendas. And that’s really unusual for a young team, because with most really young teams the reason they lose is everybody’s trying to show they’re the man. And it seems like everybody fits with in them.”

Rivers credited Johnson for pulling it all together.

“Mitch, I don’t think, is getting enough credit,” Rivers said. "I think often times when you have a great player, you forget about getting everybody to do all the other things, and Mitch has done that. And so they’re beautiful. They had a possession the other night where the ball moved around the horn, back, forth, back, forth. And I want to say (Dylan) Harper made the three. … It was coaching beauty. It really was. It was awesome. Every coach in college and high school and the pros should show that clip.

“This is what we mean by agenda-free basketball.”

On cue, the Spurs had seven scorers in double-figures against the Bucks. Vassell and Keldon Johnson had 16 each, Harper had 14, De’Aaron Fox 12 and Julian Champagnie 11.

“The sky is really the limit for all of us,” Vassell said.“You still look at KJ, me, Fox. I mean, all of us are still 25, 26, 27 years old. I mean, it’s an exciting time to be a Spur and to be a Spurs fan, for sure.”

Regardless of whether they overtake the Thunder or not.
