The NBA Board of Governors voted Wednesday to authorize the league to formally explore expansion to Seattle and Las Vegas.
Seattle has been without an NBA team since 2008, when the SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City and changed their name to the Thunder. The Sonics played in the league from 1967 through 2008, a stint that included an NBA championship in 1979 when Johnson’s father, John Johnson, was a starting forward for the team.

Johnson called Seattle and Las Vegas, the longtime home of the NBA’s Summer League, “two basketball hotbeds.”
“My ties and history with Seattle are deep and it’s crazy that I now know a generation of kids that haven’t had an NBA team in their city when I had such an intimate relationship with that organization,” Johnson said. "In terms of the business part and the actual expansion for the league, anytime we grow the league or expose different parts of the country and the world to our brand and these great players that are leading, growing the game, it’s positive.
“(League commissioner) Adam Silver and his crew will do all the due diligence and all the hard work, but I won’t be mad at adding a road trip to Seattle and Vegas selfishly.”
