MIAMI — Victor Wembanyama welcomes a healthy MVP debate. But he aims to end it by the time the playoffs begin.
“I have thought about it,” Wembanyama said. “I think right now there is a debate. There should be, even though I think I should lead the race. I’m trying to make sure that at the end of the season, there’s no debate.”
His comments came after a performance that bolstered his case.
The 22-year-old French star had 26 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks to lead the Spurs to a 136-111 rout of Bam Adebayo and the Heat on Monday night. The victory extended the Spurs’ winning streak to six games, pushed their season record to 54-18 after they finished 34-48 last season and improved their mark since the start of February to a league-best 22-2.
With the win and Houston’s 132-124 loss to Chicago, the Spurs clinched their first Southwest Division in nine seasons. With their eyes on a much bigger prize, there was no celebration.
“Obviously, (it shows) great progression and through 72 games at least,” Wembanyama said. “Now we got 10 more, so just need to finish the right way.”
After soaking his feet in a tub of ice, Wembanyama emerged from the locker room to offer three reasons why he thinks he should win the Michael Jordan Trophy over the other top contenders: Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who won it last season; Denver’s Nikola Jokic, a three-time MVP; and the Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Donĉić.
“My first one would be that defense is 50 percent of the game and that is undervalued so far in the MVP race because I believe I’m the most impactful player defensively in the league,” Wembanyama told reporters. “Second argument would be that we almost swept OKC in the season and we dominated them three times with their real team … And my third argument would be that offensive impact is not just points.”
Wembanyama elaborated on his belief that his defensive play — he averages a league-high 3.0 blocks and is considered a lock for The Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy given to the league’s top defender— bolsters his case. He’s also averaging 24.3 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists in his third season.

“I think most or every MVP in the past years has been deserved, has been rightfully picked in my opinion,” he said. “But I think it doesn’t happen often that a player … I mean, how many players have won defensive player of the year and MVP, right? Most recently Giannis (Antetokounmpo, in 2019-20) right? It doesn’t happen that often, even though it should, right? I mean, defense is 50 percent of the game. Maybe there should be an offensive player of the year award.”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was asked how close he thinks Wembanyama is to winning MVP.
“I think he’s close,” Johnson said. "No, I mean, all those guys are deserving. A couple of them obviously already have that award. I’m very biased. I get to see one of those guys every single night. I get to see him on the practice court. I get to see what he does in the morning. I get to see what he does right now after the game. So, I understand my opinion and outlook and perspective is very different than almost everyone else.
“But he affects as much of the game in every single way — on the court, on both ends, with and without the ball, what the other team tries to do, plan for, scheme, adjust to on both sides of the basketball — in my very ignorant opinion as much as any other player I’ve ever seen. Take that for whatever it’s worth, but he is someone that touches every bit of our program on, and I haven’t even mentioned off, the court.”
Against the Heat, Wembanyama also became just the third player in NBA history to amass 4,000-plus points and 300-plus 3-pointers in their first 175 career games. Donĉić and Trae Young are the others.
Playing in just his 174th career game, he reached the 4,000-point threshold with a one-handed dunk in the first half on a feed from rookie Carter Bryant.
Wembanyama also joined Spurs great David Robinson as the only two players in league history with 4,000-plus points and 600-plus blocks through their first 175 career games.
“I know a lot about him,” Wembanyama said of Robinson. “I would say the best, the most significant anecdote I knew about him was his quadruple-double. And he has often been an inspiration when doing my conditioning work in the summer. Just thinking about the way he was running through 48 minutes and 100 games a year. I think he might be the closest thing we have to Hercules in real life. I mean, just conditioning-wise and shape-wise, it was just amazing.”
Robinson was the 1995 MVP. The second Spur to collect the award was Tim Duncan, who won it back-to-back in 2002-2003.
Now, Wembanyama believes he should be the third Spur to win it.
“Right now, it is still reasonable that there is a debate,” he said. “But as I said, my goal is to make sure there’s no debate anymore at the end of the season.”
