How the Spurs’ team chemistry helped fuel a record-setting night

San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) shoots over Sacramento Kings guard Daeqwon Plowden (29) during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Tuesday, March 17, 2026, in Sacramento, Calif. The Spurs made a franchise-record 25 3-pointers and recorded a season-high 41 assists in their win over the Kings.
SACRAMENTO — Forget the Xs and Os. De’Aaron Fox believes there’s another explanation for why the Spurs hit a franchise-record 25 3-pointers and had a season-high 41 assists in their 132-104 rout of the Sacramento Kings.
“We enjoy playing together,” he said. “We enjoy seeing each other succeed, so that makes sharing the ball much easier.”
There was plenty of proof of that Tuesday night at Golden 1 Center.
The Spurs, who led by 41 in the third quarter against one of the league’s worst defensive teams, made 25 of 49 from beyond the arc (51%) in improving to 24-11 on the road.
Ten players sank at least one three and five had at least three, including Julian Champagnie, who hit 5 of 7 on his way to 17 points, and Harrison Barnes, who made 4 of 5 en route to 16 points, as the Spurs eclipsed the 24 they recorded on Jan. 31, 2025 against Milwaukee.

Lindy Waters III, who had a season-high 11 points, clinched the record when he sank his third three of the night with 30 seconds left in the game.
Tuesday night’s game marked Champagnie’s 11th this season with five-plus 3-pointers, a franchise record.
Champagnie leapfrogged four players who had 10 such games in a season: Sean Elliott (1995-96), Danny Green (2013-14), Patty Mills (2019-20) and Victor Wembanyama (2024-25).
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said Champagnie’s teammates did a great job of feeding him.
“Early in the season, we didn’t always recognize when guys were hot,” Johnson said. “I don’t think it was ever intentional or out of selfishness, but I thought tonight we saw Julian hit a couple and then some guys made intentional efforts to try to get him the ball.”
Champagnie agreed.
“Over the course of this year, we’ve gotten a lot better with just figuring out who’s making shots, who to get the ball to, and less of my turn, your turn, my turn, your turn type of basketball,” he said. “And I think it’s helped us. It just pushes the momentum, pushes everybody’s game, and everybody feels good about it.”
Champagnie also agreed with Fox’s belief that team chemistry has been a big part in the team’s success.
“That’s what makes this team work, honestly and truly,” Champagnie said. “The locker room vibe is serious. And that’s a big part of why we win and why we do what we do because everybody is able to talk to each other.”

Spurs having success on back-to-backs
The Spurs improved to 23-5 in back-to-back situations this season 24 hours after beating the Los Angeles Clippers 119-115.
That includes an impressive 11-3 mark in second games.
Although talent is the main reason for their back-to-back success, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson also gave credit to the team’s medical and athletic training staffs for pushing recovery plans for the players.
“We have a village that takes care of the players,” he said.
It’s a comprehensive approach Wembanyama appreciates.
“Over the couple of years I’ve been with this organization, I’ve learned to trust the staff,” Wembanyama said. “And my trust is hard earned, but they have it.”
