LOS ANGELES — Spurs forward Keldon Johnson bounced around the Frost Bank Center after the 115-102 win over Charlotte, playfully disrupting postgame television interviews with Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama.

“That’s my guy right here,” Johnson said when he crashed Wembanyama’s chat. “Best player in the world, MVP. If anybody else has got something to say, come holler at me.”

Castle (15 points, 10 assists) and Wembanyama (32 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists, three blocks) were worthy subjects, but Johnson also deserved a share of the spotlight Saturday after scoring 13 points in 21 minutes off the bench to move past Matt Bonner into fourth place on the Spurs career bench scoring list with 2,630 points. Johnson trails only Hall of Famer Manu Ginobili (8,278), Patty Mills (5,540) and Malik Rose (3,272).

A candidate for the John Havlicek Award as the league’s sixth man of the year, Johnson has come a long way since he struggled to accept his role when Gregg Popovich told him in December 2023 he was moving to the bench after leading the team in scoring at 22 points per game in 2022-23.

“It’s all about development,” said Johnson, who is averaging 12.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 37.9% from 3-point range and is on pace to break his own franchise season record for bench points (979) he set last season.

“I feel like when you want to win, you got to remove your ego, especially when we got the team we have,” Johnson added. “We all want to see each other be successful. I had to pull my ego away and say, ‘This is what’s best for the team.’ And if I can maximize my role coming off the bench, as talented as I am and with the things I can bring to the game, I feel like we’ll be in great shape throughout games.”

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said it’s “been a joy” to watch the 29th overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft mature and and fully accept how the team wanted to use him.

“I don’t know how much he embraced it at that time because there was no return on the investment for a while,” the coach said. “(Now) it’s a good example of Keldon’s commitment and how he’s investing into this organization.”

Although winning is his top priority, the team’s current longest-tenured player at seven seasons admitted it’s a rush to rank alongside such notable Spurs as Ginobili, Mills and Rose.

“There are things I would say you try to downplay,” he said of such milestones like the one he achieved Saturday, “but it’s big time and it’s just a testament to my hard work game and everything I’ve been through.”

After playing the Clippers on Monday night, the Spurs face the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night. That means Johnson gets another opportunity to thank DeMar DeRozan for mentoring him as a young player.

DeRozan, who played for the Spurs for three seasons before they traded him to Chicago in August 2021, used to drive from San Antonio to Austin to cheer on Johnson when the Kentucky alumnus saw time in the G League as a rookie.

“He was definitely a huge, huge part of my journey,” Johnson said of DeRozan. "I feel like guys like him, Rudy (Gay), Dejounte (Murray), those guys really took me under their wing and really helped me become a real professional. DeMar always believed in me. He always would show up to games, him, Dejounte, those guys, and show love whenever they could.

“It meant a lot to me as a young player and any chance I get I show those guys love because without them being big brothers to me it would have been hard for a young kid like me to find his way.”

Injuries deplete bench: The Spurs faced the Clippers on Monday night without two key reserves.

Rookie guard Dylan Harper missed his second game in a row with a bruised right calf. Center Luke Kornet was also out after emerging from the win over the Hornets with a sore right knee.

Kornet finished Saturday’s game with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and a 2-of-2 showing from the foul line to go along with eight rebounds and an assist in 20 minutes. Two of his field goals came on lob buckets set up by Wembanyama in the third quarter in the so-called “French Vanilla” lineup.

Mitch Johnson said before Saturday’s game Harper was day to day and there were no “long-term concerns” about his injury, which he suffered while driving to the basket for a layup in Thursday night’s 136-131 loss to Denver.

The No. 2 overall pick finished with 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and one block in 24 minutes.
