3 takeaways as Spurs roll Hornets in Victor Wembanyama’s return

Victor Wembanyama was back to his old tricks Saturday after missing a game with a sore right ankle.
“I thought he looked good,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
And don’t take Johnson’s word for it.
Wembanyama blazed to 32 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists — and added three blocks and two steals to boot — as the Spurs earned a 115-102 victory over a Charlotte team that has been something of a bane of late.
De’Aaron Fox added 17 points for the Spurs and Stephon Castle followed Thursday’s triple-double with 15 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.
The victory improved the Spurs to 49-18, one away from their first 50-win season since a 2016-17 campaign that featured 61 of them.
With it, the Spurs finished their six-game homestand 5-1, with the lone loss coming Thursday against Denver with Wembanyama in street clothes.
Miles Bridges scored 22 points to lead the Hornets, while rookie guard Kon Knueppel added 20.
The Spurs led by as many 18 points in the first half, but saw Charlotte crawl within four in the fourth quarter.
Bridges’ 3-pointer brought the Hornets within 92-88 with 9:37 to play.
From there, the Spurs put the clamps on, holding Charlotte (34-33) without a basket for a span of 5½ minutes.
Knueppel broke that drought by making one of two free throws with 4:05 remaining, by which point the Spurs led 104-89.
Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s victory as the Spurs next embark on a two-game trip to face the Los Angeles Clippers and Sacramento Kings:
1. Spurs reverse Charlotte curse
Over the past half decade, the Hornets have been a brutal matchup for the Spurs, winning nine of the past 10 meetings heading into Saturday.
This time around, the Spurs were able to limit what Charlotte does best.
“A lot of teams want to get to the rim — and (the Hornets) still get there,” Johnson said. “But I think they also want to get to the paint to draw crowds and then spray out because they’re so devastating from 3.”
Since the All-Star break, the Spurs and Hornets were the only two teams in the NBA connecting at a clip better than 40% from 3-point range.
Neither hit that mark Saturday, and that played into the Spurs’ favor.
Charlotte finished the night 18 of 54 from beyond the arc. The Spurs were 11 of 33.
The Spurs were able to overcome that deficit from the 3-point stripe by pummeling the Hornets in the paint (58-30) and winning the foul line (18-14).
Charlotte ranks as the NBA’s third-best team in terms of second-chance points. The Spurs won that battle 20-16.
Charlotte guard LaMelo Ball came into the game averaging 24 points in eight career games vs. Spurs, his most against any Western Conference opponent.
Plagued by foul trouble, Ball was unable to get truly rolling Saturday, finishing 6 of 13 for 17 points in 22 minutes.
Since Christmas, the Hornets have boasted the best offense the the NBA. The Spurs held them to 102 points, which in the modern game might as well equate to a shutout.
All of that helped the Spurs flip the script against a team that had so often been their nemesis.

2. “French Vanilla” has its moment
With Wembanyama back, Johnson was able to deploy the so-called “French Vanilla” double big-man lineup for a stretch of the third quarter.
It worked well.
On two consecutive possessions during that stretch, the Spurs got baskets when the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama tossed a lob to the 7-foot-1 Kornet.
The extra beef in the middle helped keep Charlotte out of the paint and helped keep the Hornets from hammering the boards. Kornet ended with 10 points and eight rebounds, flirting with his first double-double since December.
Johnson has not used the Wembanyama-Kornet pairing an overwhelming amount this season, but says it’s not for lack of want-to.
“I’ve voiced the desire,” Johnson said.
Part of the reason that lineup has been limited is Johnson’s intention to keep heavy minutes off both his big men. Usually, Wembanyama grabs his rest when Kornet is in the game.
“It becomes a math problem,” Johnson said.
That hasn’t been a look the Spurs have visited much in practice as the season has worn on, simply because NBA teams do not practice much in the thick of an 82-game grind.
“If we haven’t trained and worked it out and really have a clear direction of what we’re looking for in certain situations,” Johnson said, “it’s tough than to ask them to go out in a game like that and execute at high level.”
French Vanilla might not be an every-night flavor for the Spurs, but it was good while it lasted Saturday.
3. KJ climbing bench scoring chart
Sixth Man of the Year candidate Keldon Johnson was coming off his worst game of the season, a five-point, 2-for-12 dud in the loss to Denver on Thursday.
He bounced back nicely against the Hornets.
Johnson scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and chipped in five rebounds, serving as the ringleader of the bench that was without a dynamic scoring piece in Dylan Harper (calf contusion).
In doing so, Johnson climbed past Matt Bonner for fourth place on the Spurs’ all-time bench scoring charts (2,630 points).
Malik Rose is third with 3,272, while Manu Ginobili and Patty Mills rank first and second, respectively.
