Spurs’ Keldon Johnson plays in milestone game

OKLAHOMA CITY– Keldon Johnson played in his 400th game with the Spurs on Thursday after entering the contest with the fifth most points in franchise history in that number of outings.

Johnson, who in his seventh season is the longest-tenured current Spur after the club selected him 29th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, had 6,138 career points after bagging a season- and game-high 25 in the 130-110 win over Oklahoma City on Tuesday night.

The only players in Spurs history with more in their first 400 games with the club are David Robinson (10,144), Tim Duncan (9,100) Mike Mitchell (8,664) and Kawhi Leonard (6,533).

Johnson hit another milestone Tuesday night when he notched his 25th game of scoring 20-plus points off the bench. Since 1976-77 only two other players have recorded more such games: Hall of Famer Manu Ginobili (100) and Patty Mills (35).

“That’s my job,” Johnson said of his sixth-man role. “I take pride in doing what my team needs me to do. And for me, it’s being an energy guy, being a leader, being whatever, being adaptable to whatever role I need to be in for my team to be successful. And I put my teammates first. I put my team first.”

In his first 400 games, Keldon Johnson has “definitely shown how important he is to the organization,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said before Thursday’s game.

“We’ve brought him off the bench way before he needed to be, he accepted it, gave his (No. 3) to CP (Chris Paul), and he continuously shows how important he is not just through his on-the-court production and play (but his leadership),” the coach said. “My first year in San Antonio with Pop (former Spurs coach Gregg Popovich) was Keldon’s rookie year, so it’s been fun to see (his growth). There was a time when he was a young pup getting yelled at in shootarounds by LA (LaMarcus Aldridge) and DeMar (DeRozan) and those guys. And now to see him (as a veteran), it’s funny at times, but cool to see.”

Mitch Johnson said the aspect of Keldon Johnson’s game he admires most is his consistency.

“We’ve lost a lot, when we’ve won, when he’s played a little bit, when he’s played the whole game, when he’s led us in scoring, when he hasn’t, the guy’s consistent,” Mitch Johnson said. “And I love that about him. And I probably would also add I’ve probably coached him harder than any other player in this program since I’ve been here, and he does nothing but take it and never (responds negatively) about it, and that really helps me.”

Coach recalls Christmas magic in NYC

Mitch Johnson has fond memories of coaching in his first Christmas Day game, last season’s 117-114 loss to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

“Huge day for our league, rightfully so,” he said. "A lot of times you get big-time matchups that produce big-time games and it’s just fun to be a part of. I think MSG last year was a little added allure in the sense that I think MSG has that on a Tuesday in February. So Christmas, waking up in New York, being in New York, the game’s at noon.

“…It was a special feeling and it was a pretty cool moment regardless of the actual game.”

Mitch Johnson lauds franchise’s consistency

Mitch Johnson said he saw something special in the Oklahoma City Thunder organization during his brief stint with the D League (now G League) Tulsa 66ers (now OKC Blue) after going undrafted as a point guard out of Stanford in 2009.

“I was only there for camp,” he said, referring to the 66ers waiving him before he went on to play in Europe. "But I remember just a really competitive camp. The one thing I think I could say in terms of the organization, because there’s some people that have been here for a while that I’ve gotten to know over the years, and there’s some people that have some ties to San Antonio, is the professionalism, the consistency, and just the systematic process they have really committed to over time.

“You see when you build something right, how sustainable and how impactful that can be.”
