How Derrick White tormented his former team in Celtics’ loss to Spurs

Boston Celtics guard Derrick White (9) plays against the San Antonio Spurs at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Celtics 125-116.
Derrick White had a big game in a losing effort against his former team.
White, who spent his first four-plus seasons with the Spurs before they traded him to Boston in February 2022, had a team- and season-high 34 points, seven assists and five rebounds in a team-high 40 minutes in the Celtics’ 125-116 loss.
It was the most points White has scored at the Frost Bank Center since he had 36 in a 118-108 win over Denver in Game 3 of the first round of the 2019 playoffs, which the Nuggets went on to win in seven games.
“I got a lot of love for a lot of people in this arena,” he said. “It was good to see a lot of people from when I first started.”
For the season, White is averaging career bests in points (17.5), assists (5.7), steals (1.2) and blocks (1.4). It’s a far cry from the days when he was a timid rookie for the Spurs after they selected him 29th overall in 2017 out of Colorado.
“I remember his first game in the D League when he got hurt and he got dominated by a couple of guys that weren’t NBA players,” said Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, who coached White as an assistant with Austin in those days.
But Johnson was quick to add he’s not surprised White has developed into such a tough, all-around player — one who helped the Celtics win a title in 2024.
“One of the best people I’ve coached, one of the best teammates I’ve been around. … Just a hardworking, very good person that you’re happy for with all the success,” Johnson said. “And I’m glad we don’t have to play him more than two times during the regular season.”
