Derrick White has led a charmed life since leaving the Spurs in February of 2022.
“His family is growing, he’s got his own beer, he’s a champion,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “He’s riding high.”
Back in town with Boston on Saturday, White helped the Celtics to a 121-111 victory that gave the defending NBA champs their ninth consecutive victory.
It was enough to raise a glass of his signature (Derrick) White ale that has taken Beantown by storm.
White didn’t have his best game Saturday, scoring 13 points. The Celtics being the Celtics, however, he had plenty of help.
Jayson Tatum returned from a left ankle sprain to tally 29 points with 10 rebounds, while Jrue Holiday added 21 points. Seven of the eight Boston players who played reached double figures.
“Obviously we want to win,” Spurs guard Devin Vassell said. “It just goes to show that even though we’re missing some of our key players, we’re in every game.”
Keldon Johnson scored 23 points off the bench to lead the Spurs, who lost their third in a row. Stephon Castle continued his Rookie of the Year run with 22 points and a team-best eight assists.
Boston led from the middle of the first quarter on, building an advantage that got as high as 17 points. The Spurs clawed to within four in the third quarter, but could climb no closer.
White, whose trade to Boston in February 2022 ignited the Spurs’ years-long rebuilding effort, had a hand in the Celtics shutting the door in the fourth.
He made a series of big plays — an offensive board to set up a Luke Kornet layup, a swished 3-pointer, a pull-up jumper over Vassell — to help keep the Spurs at bay.
“He deserves everything he’s gotten and more,” Mitch Johnson said of White. “It’s fun to follow him and be a fan of his.”
After Saturday, the Spurs and White parted ways again, with the Celtics likely headed for a deep playoff run and title defense, and the Spurs headed to a sixth consecutive trip to the draft lottery.
Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s defeat, which dropped the Spurs to 31-42:
1. The schedule is doing no favors
Six days ago, the Spurs left Toronto on a three-game winning streak. They’ve since lost three in a row, despite playing more minutes of good basketball than bad.
The schedule isn’t helping.
Saturday marked the Spurs’ second consecutive loss against a team that fancies itself an NBA title contender in the East. The Celtics come about that designation honestly, winning last year’s title.
As it was in Cleveland on Thursday, the Spurs at least made Boston work for the W.
Moral victories do not count in the standings, but the Spurs are hopeful they can gain something from this tough stretch of the schedule.
“I feel like we didn’t play bad, especially in the half court,” Castle said. “Against a team like that, you have to really emphasize the little things in order to win.”
For the Spurs, Saturday’s game was the third in a stretch of seven in a row against teams with winning records. Of the Spurs’ remaining nine games, only two are against opponents under .500 — at Portland on April 6 and the season-finale at home against Toronto on April 13.
They also had an originally scheduled day of rest taken away when the NBA had to reschedule Orlando’s trip to San Antonio to Tuesday to accommodate the Spurs’ makeup date at the Los Angeles Lakers initially postponed by the L.A. wildfires in January.
Instead, Saturday’s loss to the Celtics kicked off a spate of four games in five nights for the Spurs.
2. Size still matters in the NBA
The Celtics shot their way to last season’s NBA crown by getting up more 3-pointers than any team in the league.
They were back at it Saturday, hitting 17 of 51 from beyond the arc.
It was Boston’s size, however, that ultimately doomed the Spurs.
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla went with a double-big lineup in the fourth quarter, using 7-footers Porzingis and Kornet together.
“At that point in the game, we were inching back into it,” Castle said. “Getting them off the glass was a big part of the game. So I feel like it was just a good coaching adjustment by them to put them both in.”
Johnson had fewer levers to pull to counter Boston’s size.
The tallest player on the Spurs’ roster is the 6-9 Sandro Mamukelashvili. He soaked up most of the backup center minutes behind the 6-8 Jeremy Sochan.
Not surprisingly, Boston dominated the glass with a 54-35 edge. The Celtics grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, and parlayed that into a 26-3 edge in second-chance points.
Kornet feasted, scoring 15 points and seizing a career-best 16 rebounds.
It all made the Spurs’ comeback bid untenable. Boston grabbed five offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter, meaning five extra possessions. The Celtics’ had six second-chance points in the frame.
This has been a nightly issue since the 7-foot-3 Victor Wembanyama was lost for the season in February. It could be less of a problem Sunday, when a Golden State team that starts the 6-6 Draymond Green at center comes to town.
3. CP3 had a throwback moment
By halftime Saturday, Chris Paul had logged zero points. He entered the fourth quarter with only two.
Then the 39-year-old point guard momentarily went back in time.
Paul scored 10 points in a span of 3:12 of the fourth quarter, drawing the Spurs as close as seven points.
“It was fun to do that,” Paul said. “It used to happen a lot more often.”

Saturday’s spurt served as a reminder that, even in his 20th NBA season, Paul still has the ability to occasionally take over a game.
He threw in a pull-up jumper in the paint, knocked down a pair of 3-pointers — including one with Boston’s Sam Hauser practically in his jersey — and had another tricky turnaround on the baseline.
“That was flow of the game,” Paul said. “You know, just trying to figure out when I can pick my spots for our team.”
