BOSTON — Even with the All-Star break looming, Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson did not think his team would have much trouble getting up for Wednesday’s nationally televised game against the defending NBA champions in Boston.
“ESPN, Boston, the Garden,” Johnson said. “I don’t think we have to worry too much about people looking ahead.”
The Spurs weren’t looking ahead, per se.
They just ran wide-eyed into a Celtics team that showed why they raised another banner to the rafters of the TD Garden after last season.
All-star guard Jayson Tatum had 32 points and Kristaps Porzingis scored 29 as the Celtics made short work of the Spurs in a 116-103 victory.
The rout came with a pair of Boston starters, Jrue Holiday and Jaylen Brown, sidelined with injuries.
Boston led by 24 points in the first half and survived the Spurs’ mini run in the second half that at one point carved the deficit to eight.

The Spurs will aim to build on those final two quarters when they return from the All-Star break.
“Tonight we were hungry in the second half,” Wembanyama said. “We’re going to try to hang on to that feeling.”
Victor Wembanyama paved a path to All-Star weekend with 17 points, 13 rebounds and a pair of blocks. De’Aaron Fox led the Spurs with 23 points, his fourth 20-point game in five outings since joining the team, while Stephon Castle added 20.
The Spurs were outscored 37-19 in the first quarter, and spent the rest of the game trying to dig out of that hole.
They closed to within 95-87 on two Castle free throws with 10:10 to play, but the Celtics got back-to-back 3-pointers from Porzingis and Peyton Pritchard to blow the lead out again.
“We have little stretches where we look really good and those stretches where we don’t,” Fox said. “You can’t expect to win scoring 20 and then giving up 40 and a quarter and you’re playing catch-up the entire game.”
The loss sent the Spurs to 2-4 on the first leg of their rodeo trip as they head into the break. They resume play with back-to-back games in Austin against Phoenix and Detroit on Feb. 20 and 21.
Here are three takeaways from Wednesday’s defeat, which put the Spurs at 23-29 entering the hiatus:
1. Derrick White is beloved in two NBA cities
Johnson’s association with Boston guard Derrick White goes back to 2017, when White was the Spurs’ first-round draft pick.
As an assistant with the Spurs’ G League affiliate, Johnson was there the day White made his professional debut against the Texas Legends.
It did not go well.
“He got his butt kicked by Donald Sloan and Justin Dentmon,” Johnson said.
Adding injury to insult, White fractured his wrist in that game and was sidelined for the next six weeks.
“That was the only reason he finished the season in the G League with us,” Johnson said. “We won the championship and it was a joke he was even on the court, he was that good.”
White was traded to Boston in February of 2022, a deal that seems to have worked out well for both sides.
The 2022 first-round pick the Spurs received in the trade did not exactly hit the jackpot. It became little-used guard Blake Wesley.
The 2028 pick swap the Spurs got also may or may not amount to anything.
But dealing White was one of the first dominoes the Spurs toppled that led to gaining the No. 1 overall pick in 2023 and the right to select Wembanyama.
White, meanwhile, has become a staple in Boston over the past three years.
He played in an NBA Finals a few months after joining the Celtics, and was a starter for last season’s NBA championship team.
White played a large role in Boston’s win over his former team Wednesday, with 19 points and nine assists.
“It’s just a testament to him and everything he has done since (the trade),” Johnson said.
2. No surprise the Celtics owned the 3-point line
Any team facing Boston knows it is going to have to deal with a 3-point barrage. The Celtics came into Wednesday attempting a league-high 48.3 per game, which resulted in a league-high 17.7 made 3-pointers per game.
The Spurs could not keep up, especially in the early going.
Where Boston made seven long balls in its sizzling first quarter, and 13 in the first half, the Spurs continued to chip the paint off the TD Garden iron.

The team started 1-of-15 from 3-point range, and finished the first half 3 of 21.
“I actually thought we missed some pretty good shots,” Johnson said. “There was a stretch in there we took some poor ones, but early on I thought we had some really good shots.”
Boston ended the night 18-of-55 from beyond the arc. The Spurs were 9-of-39.
That 27-point deficit from 3-point land proved too much for the Spurs to overcome.
3. Could Biyombo have helped the on the glass?
The Spurs were outrebounded again Wednesday, this one by a count of 56-38. They continue to play small when Wembanyama is off the floor, playing Jeremy Sochan as an undersized center.
The 7-foot Porzingis took full advantage of that height difference, part of the reason he was able to roll to a big night.
All of that begged the question: Why no Bismack Biyombo?
The Spurs signed the veteran big man to a 10-day contract Sunday, but he has yet to make his Spurs debut.
Johnson did not bite when asked if he considered using Biyombo against the Celtics, but did make a case that it might not have mattered anyhow.
“It’s sometimes counterintuitive — long shots, long rebounds,” Johnson said. “There were shots that were missed and over our head. It wasn’t that we were being bullied. Some of that is just discipline and understanding when they shoot 3s, those misses aren’t the same as misses at the rim."
