French fan Jean Patrick Nourricier cheers on the Spurs and his countryman Victor Wembanyama during the Spurs’ 121-106 win over Detroit on Thursday night, March 5, 2026 at the Frost Bank Center.

Victor Wembanyama experienced a surge of patriotism when he heard the French national anthem being sung in the stands at the Frost Bank Center on Thursday night.

About 30 fans from Wembanyama’s home country attended the Spurs’ 121-106 win over Detroit, with many wearing black berets and waving French flags while cheering on the 7-foot-4 All-Star center and his teammates.

“It feels good. It warms your heart," Wembanyama told the French newspaper L’Équipe after the game when asked about the fans singing “La Marseillaise.”

"If I hadn’t been in the middle of warming up, I would have sung with them, of course,” Wembanyama added.

Jean Patrick Nourricier, a resident of Nîmes, a city in southern France, headed the group.

“Every year I bring people to Spurs games,” said Nourricier, 44. “It’s so much fun. It’s like living a dream. We watch the Spurs at two in the morning in France. We love it. I’ve been a fan of the Spurs since 1992, when David Robinson was my favorite player.”

Wembanyama had a dominating performance in Thursday’s game that undoubtedly made Robinson proud, finishing with 38 points, 16 rebounds, five blocks and three assists in 39 minutes.

Many of the French fans plan on sticking around for a few more games during the Spurs’ six-game homestand, which continues Friday night with an outing against former Spur Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers.
