Spurs coach praises Kornet for taking on Hawks strip club promotion

San Antonio Spurs center/forward Luke Kornet (7) dunks the ball in the first quarter as the Spurs take on the Suns on Thursday night, Feb. 19, 2026 in the first of two “I-35 Series” games in Austin at the Moody Center.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised Luke Kornet for showing “courage” in speaking out against the Atlanta Hawks promoting an Atlanta strip club.

The center asked the Hawks to cancel their March 16 promotion for “Magic City” in his latest post for the blog he publishes on the website Medium. He wrote that “allowing the promotion to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society.”

Kornet’s take received mixed reviews, but Johnson told reporters before the Spurs’ game against the Sixers on Tuesday night in Philadelphia that he thought the 30-year-old big man presented his case against the promotion in a “thoughtful” manner.

“When you’re a public figure, anything you say in front of a microphone, and maybe not in front of a microphone, is open for criticism,” Johnson told reporters. "That comes with the territory. When someone, in a situation like Luke’s, intentionally shares their opinion, that takes a lot of courage. You’re opening yourself up for everyone to have an opinion or give criticism to your opinion.

“I thought he did it in a very thoughtful way, in a way to encourage and produce conversation. Not judgement or trying to tell someone how they’re supposed to feel. I thought it took a lot of courage.”

Readers of Kornet’s blog praised him for his stance, but he also faced a backlash on social media.

“This (expletive) never said a word before … now he’s mad Atlanta wants to celebrate something legendary in there (sic) city,” @maleek223 wrote on X.

But Golden State’s Al Horford, who played with Kornet when they were both with Boston, offered his support on social media.

“Well said Luke,” Horford wrote on X.

Kornet addressed the controversy before the Spurs’ 131-91 win at Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

“The hope was to be able to voice a perspective I think a lot of people share across the league,” Kornet said. "I’m not on social media and stuff. I know there was criticism the other way. I think it’s good to be able to open up the conversation and kind of sort that out in a public forum and just make sure we’re capable of having a discussion.”
