Why the Spurs’ Luke Kornet wants the Hawks to cancel a promotion

San Antonio Spurs’ Luke Kornet reacts to a call during the first half of an NBA basketball game against the New York Knicks Sunday, March 1, 2026, in New York.
PHILADELPHIA — Spurs center Luke Kornet is doubling down on his call for the Atlanta Hawks to cancel a promotional night the club has scheduled with an Atlanta strip club.
Kornet made the request Monday in his latest post for the blog he publishes on the website Medium, sparking a day of debate on social media.
Speaking after the Spurs’ shootaround Tuesday in Philadelphia, Kornet reiterated his belief the Hawks should nix the event and said he was prepared for any kind of backlash his blog post might bring.
“The hope was to be able to voice a perspective I think a lot of people share across the league,” Kornet said. "I’m not on social media and stuff. I know there was criticism the other way. I think it’s good to be able to open up the conversation and kind of sort that out in a public forum and just make sure we’re capable of having a discussion.”
Kornet first became aware of the Hawks’ intentions last week, ultimately opting to go public with his concerns.
“This week the Atlanta Hawks ‘announced a special one-night collaboration to celebrate the city’s iconic cultural institution Magic City’ during the team’s home game against Orlando on Monday, March 16,” Kornet wrote. “In its press release the Hawks failed to acknowledge that this place is, as the business itself boasts, ‘Atlanta’s premier strip club.’ Given this fact, I would like to respectfully ask that the Atlanta Hawks cancel this promotional night with Magic City.”
Kornet, a devout Catholic, explained his desire to see the Hawks’ scratch the promotional night centers on his belief that the NBA should “desire to protect and esteem women,” many of whom he wrote “work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world.”
“We should promote an atmosphere that is protective and respectful of the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love,” Kornet wrote. "Allowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society.
“Regardless of how a woman finds her way into the adult entertainment industry, many in this space experience abuse, harassment, and violence to which they should never be subjected.”
Kornet expounded on his uneasiness with the promotion after Tuesday’s team walkthrough at Xfinity Mobile Arena..
“It didn’t really represent what I know myself and a lot of others in the NBA felt,” Kornet said. “I want to make sure that part of the discussion was expressed.”
Kornet said he has not been contacted by anyone in the Hawks’ organization since his post hit the Internet. He said he voiced his concerns with the league office before writing his blog, but has not received any official feedback since posting.
“We have no comment,” Garin Narain, the Hawks executive vice president/chief communications officer, said in an email to the San Antonio Express-News after the newspaper shared a link to Kornet’s blog with him.
Kornet said he had mostly received a positive response from the post.
“Coming off a week where male athletes allowed disparagement towards their female peers on a world stage, it is incredibly refreshing to see you stand up for and stand with women, Luke,” Stacey Grigas wrote in the comments section of Kornet’s blog. “It means so much as a woman reading this. Thank you!”
Others are defending the Magic City promotion.
Kornet’s post came just days after The Athletic’s David Aldridge, a longtime NBA reporter, wrote a commentary for The New York Times detailing the Hawks’ decision to promote the club under the headline “The Hawks honoring the Magic City strip club isn’t really worth your outrage.”
Aldridge explained that Magic City has been in business for 40 years and has been “central to the development of the rap, trap and hip-hop scene in the city, which has produced a slew of multi-million-selling artists in the last 20 years: T.I., Migos, Jermaine Dupri, 2 Chainz, Killer Mike, Big Boi, Future and numerous others.”
“Magic City became an unofficial A&R hub,” filmmaker Bayan Joonam, one of the executive producers of a five-part docuseries on Magic City that ran last year on STARZ, told Georgia Public Radio last year, per Aldridge.
Aldridge also reported the Magic City promotion has been a hit with fans, pointing out that a team spokesman said 2,000 tickets were sold in the first 24 hours after the club announced the promotion and that it has received more than 90% approval for the decision on social media.
“I don’t think that I’ve gotten as many requests for tickets to a game,” Melissa Proctor, the Hawks’ and State Farm Arena’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, told Aldridge. “I have people saying, ‘Hold a hoodie for me on the side.’ "
“For this and other reasons, the Hawks aren’t backing up at all,” Aldridge wrote. “Their organization, up to and including ownership, has longstanding ties to the club.”
Aldridge added, "The actress, producer and philanthropist Jami Gertz — a co-owner of the team along with her husband, Hawks governor Tony Ressler — co-executive produced the STARZ docuseries. Her son Nick, now the team’s principal adviser to his father, was a Georgetown University classmate of Cole Brown, the author and producer who was helping Dupri get his memoir together a few years ago. One of the chapters in the book was about the impact of Magic City on the Atlanta music scene.
“And the first people Gertz met when she and Ressler attended their first game in State Farm Arena were the sons of the club’s legendary founder and owner — Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney — JuJu and Michael “Little Magic” Barney.”
Aldridge reported, per Proctor, that the club’s dancers "will not take part in any aspect of the evening. But Proctor said employees of the club will have access to a suite at the arena to watch the game.
“This wasn’t a cakewalk, easy decision,” Proctor said. “We had to make sure we positioned the experience in a way that made sense for our business. That was 100 percent of how we landed where we did. … We’re spotlighting a place that’s had a huge impact on Atlanta culture, at the end of the day. There’s nothing that’s going to be super provocative at the game. We are at the top of the league in our game presentation. If you’re not from Atlanta, you may not understand.”
Kornet said he understood some across the league might not share his view of the Magic City promotion. He felt obligated to speak out anyway.
“That’s part and parcel of actually trying to get the conversation started,” Kornet said Tuesday. "It’s something that is important to help ensure the league is something that everyone is wanting to represent and an environment we want to have.”
