NEW YORK – No team in the NBA wishes February could stick around more than the Spurs.

Powered by 26 points from Julian Champagnie and a well-rounded scoring effort, the Spurs romped past Brooklyn 126-110 on Thursday at the Barclays Center.

It marked the Spurs’ 11th victory in a row, extending their longest winning streak since 2013-14.

With the win, the Spurs finished February a pristine 11-0. It was the third undefeated month in Spurs history, and first since the 2013-14 squad went 16-0 in March.

“It feels like the players are finding different ways to win,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “That’s a sign of growth.”

It was quite a homecoming for the Brooklyn-born Champagnie, who made 6 of his 9 3-point tries.

Stephon Castle added 18 points and went 10 of 12 from the foul line for for the Spurs, who burst out to a 22-point lead against the moribund Nets in the first half and never trailed.

Michael Porter Jr. scored 25 points with 14 rebounds in a losing effort for Brooklyn, which dropped to 15-43.

The Spurs won despite a pedestrian night – by his standards – from All-Star center Victor Wembanyama, who had 12 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Here are three takeaways from Thursday’s victory, as the Spurs kept the good times rolling in improving to 43-16:

1. Wemby could use some time off, and will get it

After Wednesday’s victory in Toronto, Wembanyama said his personal schedule – beginning with the All-Star break – has been catching up to him.

In his mind, that is what is fueling his rough shooting stretch over the past three games.

As expected, another game less than 24 hours later in Brooklyn, which featured the team not arriving at its mid-town Manhattan hotel until after 3 a.m. the night before did not exactly rejuvenate him.

Wembanyama was 3 for 9 from the floor Thursday, posting more fouls (five) than field goals made.

His final line was fine, especially given the blowout nature of the victory, but his legs are clearly leaden at this point.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said the team did not consider sitting Wembanyama against the Nets, even though it was the second night of a back-to-back.

This much is clear, however: The two days off between Thursday’s win and Sunday’s matinee against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden should do Wembanyama good.

2. Johnson empathizes with callow Nets

Brooklyn used a pair of rookies in the starting lineup (Nolan Traore and Egor Demin) and had two more in the bench rotation (Danny Wolf and Drake Powell).

Not too far removed from coaching one of the youngest team in the league, Mitch Johnson can sympathize with his Nets counterpart, Jordi Fernandez.

The task of teaching teenagers in the NBA is a challenging one, he said.

“It’s hard to ask another 19-year-old to help another 19-year-old,” Johnson said. “It’s like asking a bunch of kids who are just learning how to swim to make sure the other one doesn’t drown.”

The Spurs aren’t exactly decrepit. Johnson fielded a pair of rookies themselves in Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant.

The rest of Johnson’s rotation has been filled out mostly by veterans who have been through at least some level of NBA battles. The Spurs’ oldest starter is the 28-year-old De’Aaron Fox. Their oldest rotation player is 33-year-old Harrison Barnes.

Johnson’s advice for Nets fans?

“You have to take a step back and give them grace and be patient, because they’re learning how to survive in this league,” Johnson said.

The message is clear. Even in the midst of another lost season, Brooklyn need not give up hope on its corps of young up-and-comers.

All the Nets need is a Wembanyama type in the next draft and they are off and running.

3. It was good night for both of Spurs’ New Yorkers

Not only did Champagnie dust off his highest-scoring game since Jan. 20 in the win, his fellow New York(ish) native enjoyed a solid Big Apple debut as well.

Rookie guard Dylan Harper was born across the Hudson River in Franklin Lakes, N.J., about an hour’s drive from the Barclays Center.

Make no mistake. Harper considers New York home.

Playing in his first NBA game in his hometown, Harper scored 12 points and handed out a team-high seven assists.

One play in the second half told the tale of Harper’s night, when he the Nets had him dead to rights in a trap near half court.

Harper somehow split the pair of Brooklyn defenders, briefly losing control of the ball, before re-gathering and charging through a wide open lane for a thundering dunk.

For Champagnie and Harper, the New York state of mind continues as the Spurs hang around to await the Spurs’ next game Sunday against the Knicks.
