3 takeaways as Spurs overcome Wemby’s off night to win 10th straight

TORONTO — Victor Wembanyama struggled to score. The Spurs looked more than a step or two slow in the third quarter against a team playing on the second night of a back to back. They shot just 53% from the foul line.
But they still managed to push their winning streak to 10 games.
Devin Vassell scored 21 points for his second straight 20-plus game, De’Aaron Fox had 20, and the Spurs overcame a 15-point third quarter deficit to down the Raptors 110-107 on Wednesday night to clinch their first winning season since 2018-19.
“It’s a long season,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “You got to continue to find ways to win. … Happy to see us kind of fight through a tough night a few different ways.”
With the Spurs up 109-107, Victor Wembanyama sank his first free throw after being intentionally fouled with 8.7 seconds left but missed the second, giving the Raptors a chance to tie it with a 3-pointer. Coming out of a timeout with 8.4 seconds left, Brandon Ingram got off a shot from the corner, but the ball hit the side of the backboard and Wembanyama grabbed the rebound with 3.1 seconds left to send the sellout crowd of 19,800 at Scotiabank Arena hurrying toward the exits.
For the second straight game, Wembanyama had a tough shooting night against a defense determined to slow him down, scoring just 12 — half of his season average — on 3 of 12 from the floor. He scored 21 in Monday night’s win at Detroit but missed 10 of 16.
The Spurs (42-16) also had double-digit scoring from Dylan Harper (15 to go along with seven assists, five rebounds and two steals), Stephon Castle (13) and Julian Champagnie (10) to highlight their depth.
Ingram and Immanuel Quickly each scored 20 for the Raptors (34-25).
The Raptors won the third 31-21 to take a 90-78 lead into the final frame, but the Spurs started the fourth with an 18-6 run that included 3-pointers by Castle and Harrison Barnes and a lob dunk by Wembanyama from Castle.
Scottie Barnes had 15 points after Toronto listed him as questionable with a quad injury following Monday night’s loss to Oklahoma City.
Here are three takeaways from the second game of a five-game road trip that continues Thursday night at Brooklyn:
1, Johnson shows confidence in Harper
Harper was on the court for most of crunch time while Castle watched from the bench
“Steph was healthy,” Johnson said. “He was in there for the last of the game defensively. We got different guys different nights. We got a deep team. Dylan deserved to finish the game.”

Indeed, he did. He had the hot hand scoring-wise in the first half to end up with 15 points, but he also handled the point well, dishing out seven assists against just one turnover.
A few weeks ago, Johnson said he didn’t consider Harper and Carter Bryant to be rookies any more. That’s especially true of Harper, who continues to play with a confidence and maturity well beyond his years.
2, Wembanyama needs rest
The Raptors muscled up against Wembanyama, but the 7-foot-4 Frenchman blamed his off night, which included missing 5 of 6 from distance, on a lack of rest.
“I need to do a better job getting my treatment in, getting more sleep,” he said. “I couldn’t sleep last night. Yeah, I wasn’t in shape today.”
Fortunately for the Spurs, their depth helped deliver the win.
While Wembanyama struggled offensively, Vassell, Fox, Harper and others picked up his scoring slack.
“We’ve know, and I feel like it’s been apparent this year, that we have a deep team,” Fox said. “We have guys that have missed games and we are still able to stay afloat and win games. I don’t think it’s a surprise that when someone has an off night, even someone of Victor’s caliber, I think we have enough to kind of weather that.”
3, Free throw shooting a weakness
The Spurs hit just 13 of 23 shots from the foul line after entering the game ranked 21st in the NBA in free throw percentage at 77.4.
They were especially bad in the fourth quarter, hitting just 4 of 10 for the period, including only 2 of 6 in the final 16 seconds (Harper missed two).
Johnson and Wembanyama basically shrugged it off, saying it’s part of the ebb and flow of the season. But they need to try to show improvement before the playoffs.
