AUSTIN — Here’s a scary thought for the rest of the NBA: Victor Wembanyama believes he hasn’t yet reached his full potential as a shot blocker.
“I can for sure get better,” he said.
The 7-foot-4 All-Star center said this after rejecting five shots and altering several others in the Spurs’ 121-94 rout of the shorthanded Phoenix Suns on Thursday night.
It was his ninth game of the season with at least five blocks. The Spurs are 8-1 in those games.
For the season, the 22-year-old Frenchman is averaging a league-best 2.7 blocks per game on the heels of leading the NBA in his first two seasons after averaging 3.6 in 2023-24 and 3.8 in 2024-25.
“I think I’ve been getting better even though the numbers don’t show it because players avoid (getting) blocked, clearly, so it is getting harder to block shots,” Wembanyama said. “But, of course, it can get better. I think my athleticism — I’m nowhere near my peak — so that will get better. And also just consistency, staying focused through every quarter but also every game of the season and having that drive to block shots.”
With Wembanyama setting the tone, the Spurs held an opponent to under 100 points for the seventh time this season. They are 7-0 in those games.
But this one did come with a bit of an asterisk because Suns All-Star guard Devin Booker played only nine minutes, all in the first half, before a sore right hip forced him to leave the game with just five points. He entered the contest averaging 25.2 points per game this season and 23.8 in 28 career games against the Spurs. He scored 28 and 24 points in a pair of victories over the Spurs in November.
“Hopefully, Devin’s OK,” said Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, who coached against Booker in the All-Star Game last Sunday. “You hate to see injuries happen to one of the premier players in the league.”
Phoenix (32-24) was also without Dillon Brooks, who served a one-game suspension after receiving his 16th technical foul this season, and guard Grayson Allen (ankle).
Still, the Spurs (39-16) excelled defensively in winning their seventh in a row — thanks in large part to Wembanyama’s shot blocking. He thrilled the sellout crowd of 16,258 at Moody Center when he recorded two blocks in a three-second span in the first quarter, swatting a Jalen Green layup attempt before rejecting Mark Williams’ putback bid.
“His anticipation was great,” Johnson said. “When he’s in his stance and he’s locked in mentally and he’s anticipating, obviously he’s pretty special. And so there’s five blocks and there’s many others he either deterred or altered.”
Although it’s easy to point to Wembanyama’s height as the reason he blocks so many shots, his teammates know there’s more to it.
“Probably just his timing, how fluid he is in his body and being that tall and being able to understand when somebody is about to pump fake, or jab at a driver and get back to his man and block the shot,” guard Stephon Castle said. “It’s super impressive to be able to see that and to have that luxury to be on the same side of the court as him. It definitely helps, especially with our transition offense, him being able to block the shots, grab the rebound and have great vision to push the ball ahead.”
Wembanyama also had 17 points and 11 rebounds in 25 minutes for his 25th double-double of the season.
