PHILADELPHIA — Victor Wembanyama credited the Spurs’ knowledge of the scouting report and execution of the game plan for their impressive defensive showing in a 114-94 rout of Portland on Saturday night at the Frost Bank Center.

“I would say it was knowing personnel, identifying who to stop,” Wembanyama said after scoring 30 points and registering a career-best 10 blocks in 30 minutes in the team’s second 20-point win of the season.

“The vast majority of NBA teams, including them, if you target their best players and put the ball in the hands of players that usually don’t have the ball that much, it works out.”

The Spurs won’t need a scouting report to tell them who to keep the ball away from Monday night when they face Philadelphia in the first game of a four-game trip.

On Jan. 22 last season, Joel Embiid torched them at the Wells Fargo Center for a franchise-record 70 points in leading the 76ers to a 133-123 victory.

Ravaged by injuries, including nagging knee soreness, Embiid has played in only seven games this season – a big reason why Philadelphia is just 9-17 after going 47-35 in 2023-24. But the former MVP pumped in 34 points in Friday’s 108-98 win over Charlotte after missing a game because of a sinus fracture that forced him to wear a protective mask against the Hornets.

Embiid did not play in the Sixers’ 126-99 loss to league-leading Cleveland on Saturday night because it was the second game of a back-to-back set, but he’s expected to return against the Spurs.

Wembanyama didn’t tip his hand when asked how the Spurs plan to slow Embiid down this time, but the 20-year-old Frenchman suggested he’s confident in their game plan.

“We for sure have got answers,” Wembanyama said.

It helps that Wembanyama and the Spurs (15-13) have momentum after winning four of their last five games, including their nearly wire-to-wire thumping of the Trail Blazers (9-18).

Two days after scoring 42 points in a 133-126 win over Atlanta in overtime, Wembanyama enjoyed another big scoring night while also leading a defensive charge that limited Portland to 39.6% shooting from the field, including 27.9% (12 of 43) from 3-point range. The Blazers never surpassed 25 points in a quarter.

Interim coach Mitch Johnson said the Spurs played strong team defense with active hands and “good physicality at the point of attack” that enabled Wembanyama to be well positioned to contest shots.

“It was one of our better defensive efforts for sure,” Johnson said.

And it put Wembanyama’s prodigious skills, especially defensively, in the spotlight.

His performance against the Blazers marked just the 12th game in which a player had 30 points and 10 blocks since 1974, but Wembanyama is the first to do it in 30 or fewer minutes played, according to ESPN.

The 7-foot-3 center also set a franchise record with his 62nd straight game with at least one block. David Robinson ranks second and third on that list with streaks of 61 and 55.

His 10 blocks against the Blazers came without him committing a single foul.

“I really try to avoid fouls,” he said in his native tongue in response to a question from a French reporter. “For me, it’s quite frustrating to see players dropping their hands or making unnecessary fouls. There are far too many fouls in the NBA game.”

Wembanyama leads the league in blocks per game with a 3.6 average after ranking first as a rookie last season at 3.5.

“I want to make progress on blocks,” he said.

Wembanyama rejected three shots by Jerami Grant, including a 3-point attempt from the corner in the second quarter. To Wembanyama’s point about the scouting report, Grant finished with just five points on 12 attempts after he scored 32 and attempted 19 in a 118-116 loss to the Spurs on Dec. 13 in Portland.

The Spurs gained possession of the ball after seven of Wembanyama’s blocks. Before Saturday’s game, Johnson talked about Wembanyama’s ability to keep the ball in play when he swats shots, calling it an “innate” and “very important” skill.

“It is just something you start thinking about once you get comfortable blocking shots,” Wembanyama said.

Despite sitting out the last 8 1/2 minutes while the Spurs tied their biggest margin of victory this season, Wembanyama became the first player in NBA history with four 3-pointers and 10 blocks in a game. He is also the first player under 21 with multiple games with double-figure blocks since the league started keeping track of blocks in 1974.

But winning is what matters most to Wembanyama. Along those lines, the Spurs have 15 wins before Christmas for the first time since the 2018-19 season. They finished the last two seasons with just 22 wins and they didn’t record their 15th victory last season until March 17.

“It’s really not hard to find motivation,” Wembanyama said. “I still don’t have any team achievement in my career. We haven’t qualified for the playoffs yet, haven’t won a playoff series yet or haven’t won it all. So it’s really not hard to find motivation in this league.”

Just like it won’t be difficult to find the 76er they need to keep the ball away from Monday night.

“He’s obviously one of the better players in the game,” Johnson said of Embiid. “He’s a force who scores in a variety of ways, gets to the free throw line. We’ll have to change up some looks and hopefully make him play in crowd a little bit and make him feel us in different ways. But I think the biggest thing is to not let him play in space and get into a rhythm and then also start manipulating the game and drawing fouls and being the aggressor in terms of initiating the physicality.”
