AUSTIN — The Spurs were glad to see the Phoenix Suns walk into the Moody Center on Thursday night.
“We owe them,” guard Devin Vassell said.
After dropping a pair of games in Phoenix earlier this season, the Spurs got a comeuppance of sorts with a 121-94 romp over the Suns in Austin.
Stephon Castle scored 20 points and Victor Wembanyama had 17 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks as the Spurs built a lead that grew as high as 32 points in the second half.
Dylan Harper added 17 points and De’Aaron Fox pumped in 15 with eight assists as the Spurs came out of the All-Star break as red hot as they entered it.
The victory, which improved the Spurs to 39-16 overall, was the team’s seventh in a row and improved its record to 7-0 in February.
Jalen Green scored 26 points to lead the Suns, who dropped to 32-24.
Playing in Austin for the fourth season in a row, the Spurs rolled in the first of two games at the Moody Center this week. They face Sacramento on Saturday.
By night’s end, the only complaint a sold-out crowd of 16,258 at the Moody Center could have had was that Wembanyama and the rest of the Spurs’ starters spent most of the fourth quarter on the bench in a blowout.
The Spurs finished the game with a lineup consisting of Harper and fellow rookie Carter Bryant, as well as deep bench veterans Jordan McLaughlin, Kelly Olynyk and Bismack Biyombo.
Here are three takeaways from Thursday’s rout:
1. Spurs get one over on Suns
Heading into Thursday, the Suns were one of only three teams to have beaten the Spurs twice this season.
What that means is in the eye of the beholder.
Both of those games came in Phoenix in November. Wembanyama, Castle and Dylan Harper were injured in the second meeting.
In the first, Wembanyama was held to nine points on 4-of-14 shooting.
That seemed significant, because he was guarded in that game by Dillon Brooks, who had often stymied Wembanyama the past two seasons while in Houston.
Given that, it is difficult to determine how much Thursday’s result meant either.
Brooks was out, serving a league-mandated suspension for picking up his 16th technical foul before the All-Star break.
Even so, the Spurs believe they are a different team than the one that struggled to figure out Phoenix in November.
The Suns have to agree.

2. Spurs’ defense roared out of the break
Yes, the Suns came into the game missing their second-leading scorer in Brooks. Phoenix lost leading scorer Devin Booker in the second quarter due to a hip injury.
Still, the Spurs remained locked in defensively no matter who was on the floor.
Phoenix shot 37.1% from the field and 28.6% from 3-point range.
Wembanyama set the tone, of course, with his eighth game this season with at least five blocks. His energy was contagious for a Spurs team flying around the Moody Center.
In the end, the Suns became the seventh opponent this season to fail to reach 100 points.
The Spurs are 7-0 in those games.
3. Kornet gets into Austin spirit
It was perhaps lost in a game so lopsided, but Luke Kornet turned in his best game in several weeks.
The Spurs’ backup center was active on defense. He proved a solid screener, a good roller and a better finisher.
Kornet’s 10 points were his most since Jan 15. With nine rebounds, he came within one of his first double-double since Dec. 18.
Kornet did it all in 16 minutes.
