San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan (10) warms up with his teammates before taking on the Milwaukee Bucks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026.
The NBA trade deadline came and went Thursday, and — perhaps against some odds — Jeremy Sochan remained a member of the Spurs.
With the 22-year-old defensive specialist having fallen out of coach Mitch Johnson’s playing rotation, the club made what appears to be a good-faith effort to find him a new home in advance of Thursday’s deadline.
That did not happen.
Nor did any other transaction involving the Spurs, in what turned out to be an uneventful trade season in San Antonio.
“It’s just a weird part of the year for everybody, regardless of what your personal situation is,” Johnson said. “I think everybody gets a little uneasy around this time because change can be hard and sometimes it’s expected and sometimes it’s unexpected and sometimes people expect one thing and it’s totally different.”
Heading into Thursday, the Spurs had made trades of varying consequence during five consecutive Februarys.
They wound up keeping out of the fray this time, opting instead to stand pat on the roster that has them in second place of the Western Conference entering Thursday’s game at Dallas.
In all, 27 NBA teams made deals at or around this year’s deadline. Only the Spurs, Houston Rockets and Miami Heat did not.
Inactivity around the deadline might be a new phenomenon for this iteration of the Spurs, but historically the club has leaned toward keeping groups together in season.
Prior to last February, when the Spurs swung a deal with Sacramento for All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox, the last time they had added a piece of any consequence at midseason was 2012, when they obtained Stephen Jackson from Golden State in exchange for Richard Jefferson.
Expect the Spurs to actively monitor the buyout market as teams waive players post-deadline.
The club has a modest $5.1 million available to spend on a free agent. Will a full 18-man roster, the Spurs would need to waive a player to add a player.
The idea of rolling with the group that has the Spurs out to their best 50-game start since 2016-17 has some appeal. The Spurs were 34-16 entering Thursday.
“Since I’ve been here, I’ve continued to see guys get better, continue to grow together as a team and even the coaching staff,” Fox said. “Obviously the expectations have changed in the past year, and for the better.”
As promised, the Spurs did make an attempt to re-home Sochan, the No. 9 pick in the 2022 draft who has struggled to find a fit in the club’s plans as the roster has coalesced around superstar Victor Wembanyama.
Talks with New York involving forward Guerschon Yabusele snagged, reportedly over the Spurs’ refusal to take on the 30-year-old Frenchman’s $5.4 million player option for next season.
The Spurs also reportedly held discussions with Phoenix about a possible Sochan-Nick Richards swap, but those conversations likewise went nowhere.
Ultimately, Yabusele and Richards both ended up dealt to Chicago, where the Bulls were as busy on deadline day — making five deals since Saturday — as the Spurs were idle.
Sochan did not travel with the Spurs to Dallas due to what the team called a quadriceps strain.
Late last month, Sochan acknowledged the prospect his time in San Antonio might be finished. He had come to grips with the possibility of moving on.
That will likely come this offseason, when Sochan becomes a free agent for the first time in his NBA career.
“I feel like I put a lot of blood and sweat here in this city,” Sochan said in January. “That’s who I am. I’m going to put all of that into wherever I am. And I’m here right now.”
Johnson has often praised Sochan for being a good soldier this season, even as the 6-foot-8 forward sat out almost as many games (25) as he played (27).
The coach expects that will continue from Sochan now that the trade deadline has passed.
“Jeremy has been here now for four years and built up a lot of equity within this organization,” Johnson said. “I’ve appreciated his approach and his willingness to participate in every way we’ve asked him to this year.”
