Spurs match win total from last season with victory over Thunder

San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson (3) gestures for the crowd to continue cheering as the starting line up is announced before the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026.
The Spurs achieved something of note Wednesday night in terms of their season record, but coach Mitch Johnson wasn’t in a celebratory mood after they struggled to put away an injury-depleted Oklahoma City squad 116-106 at the Frost Bank Center.
The Spurs never trailed in beating the reigning NBA champion Thunder for the fourth time this season. But Johnson expected the Spurs to have an easier time against a team that played without All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (abdominal strain), Jalen Williams (hamstring strain), Chet Holmgren (back spasms) and other key rotation players.
“I think we did what we had to do to get the win,” Johnson said. “I think there’s a lot of things we could have been better at.”
Still, in downing the Thunder, the Spurs improved to 34-16, matching their win total from last season in game No. 50 of the 82-game regular season. Through 50 games, it’s the second most wins in the NBA this season behind only Oklahoma City (40-12) and the most by a Spurs team since 2016-17 when the club finished second in the Western Conference with a 61-21 record and lost to the Golden State Warriors in the conference finals.
Last season, it took the Spurs until game No. 82 to reach 34 wins. They were just 22-28 through 50 games last season.
The Spurs are on pace to record 50-something wins this season. But to get there and to snap there six-season playoff drought and do some damage in the postseason, they know they have to play better.
“I felt we got a little unfocused at times,” forward Keldon Johnson said after he led the Spurs with 25 points against the Thunder. “Ultimately, we got the win. But there are definitely some things we would love to clean up and be tighter on and be better on. We pulled together and got it done, but we definitely would like to be better.”
