OKLAHOMA CITY — Keldon Johnson celebrated his 3-point bucket late in the fourth quarter that punctuated his 25-point performance by hopping down court and screaming at the top of his lungs.

Another high-octane celebration occurred minutes later after the Spurs had completed their physical 130-110 takedown of defending NBA champion Oklahoma City on Tuesday night, this one featuring Victor Wembanyama gleefully banging a drum at center court in unison with the clapping of the fans.

Joyful moments abounded at the Frost Bank Center during and after the battle between the top two teams in the Western Conference witnessed by a sellout crowd of 19,133.

Now, the Spurs’ challenge is to maintain their high level of play in a decidedly different atmosphere in what many believe is the NBA’s newest rivalry.

Riding high after extending their winning streak to seven games, their longest since March 2019, the Spurs will carry plenty of momentum into the Christmas Day rematch with the Thunder at the Paycom Center.

But they expect the Thunder to go all out in a bid to make a statement.

“They’re going to be hungry,” Johnson said. “We’re going into hostile territory, we’re going into their home court and we got to be ready to play from the jump because we know that they are going to bring it. They’ve been consistently one of the best teams in the league and we got to go up there and match their level of physicality. We got to match their level of energy. We got to do everything.”

In beating the Thunder (26-4) for the second time in 11 days, the Spurs (22-7) outscored the league’s top team 43-28 in the fourth quarter to blow open what had been a tight game and finish with the most points scored against Oklahoma City this season.

The young, surging Spurs have won 14 of their last 17 to occupy the No. 2 spot in the West. The Thunder have lost three of their last five.

Johnson matched his season high for points by hitting a season-best five 3s in 22 minutes off the bench. Stephon Castle had 24 points, Harrison Barnes tallied 20 and rookie Dylan Harper posted season highs with five steals and 10 assists as the Spurs handed Oklahoma City its worst defeat of the season despite 33 points from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

It was a far cry from the 111-109 squeaker the Spurs won against the Thunder in the NBA Cup semifinals on Dec. 13 in Las Vegas.

This time around, the Spurs wore Oklahoma City down with their physical play, a factor in the Thunder committing 15 turnovers that led to 20 points for the home team.

“We did a great job of initiating contact,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “And I thought over time it really showed itself for us.”

“We were really locked in,” Wembanyama said.

Before and after the game, there was a lot of talk about whether the teams now have one of the league’s newest and best rivalries.

Wembanyama, who came off the bench for only 12 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes, downplayed that notion in Las Vegas, saying, “They are in their own tier.”

But after Tuesday’s game, he gave himself some wiggle room when the topic came up again.

“It feels like saying it is a rivalry would be a weird thing, because it’s something that happens naturally,” Wembanyama said. “I didn’t say that it’s impossible that it can be in the future.”

Barnes indicated he thinks the teams already have one.

“Both teams have young nucleuses that want to win and want to play at a high level,” he said. "So in order to achieve the ultimate goal, which is to hang another banner, we’re both pursuing the same goal. So, yeah, you could say that. Rivalries are good. They’re healthy. When two teams have the same expectations of what they want to do and where they want to go, and then the age factor, too, there’s a familiarity built in.”

But Mitch Johnson and his Oklahoma City counterpart, Mark Daigneault, dismissed the rivalry talk.

“I don’t view it as a budding rivalry," Mitch Johnson said. “Our group has been together 25 or some-odd games. That team won 16 games in the playoffs to win a championship. I don’t want to disrespect their program or what they’ve built. We are trying to build something and we are chasing every other team in this league. They are obviously at the forefront of it all.”

Said Daigneault, “We focus on how we perform, how we execute, how we coach. We get lost in the next competitive challenge. We use these games to test ourselves, build our habits and improve through the course of the season. All the noise around that really distracts you from those things. We’ve got a team that’s got great discipline and stays focused on the right things despite the noise around it. We don’t really think about it."

Thursday’s game will mark the third of five contests between the teams this season.

If it’s not a rivalry now, it likely will be by the end of that stretch.

For sure, the teams will know each other well when it’s over, which Daigneault suggested could help the Thunder in the long run. To underscore his point, he used last season’s Western Conference finals as an example.

“A lot of these teams — Minnesota is a good example," he said. "We played them the other night. Minnesota is in our division. We play them four times a year. Their roster has been pretty stable for the past three years or so. We played them in a playoff series. You just become so familiar with them, what they are trying to do, their personnel. And they become familiar with you. You become so familiar, you develop kind of a catalog against that team — from a playing standpoint, coaching standpoint, game-plan standpoint — that quite frankly we have not developed against this (Spurs) team.

"They’re a younger team. The personnel they have and they feature has not been intact for as long. Probably at the end of this week, we’ll understand them a lot better than we did going into the Cup game. Then we play them two more times after that. That’s just how you learn the league.”

Mitch Johnson agreed.

“They are the champs, they have the best record in the league,” he said. "So to be able to have an opportunity to fight against the best, it’s a heck of an opportunity. … It prepares you. It doesn’t mean you’ll get the result you want. But I don’t see how there’s a negative. Because a learning experience or a moment of vulnerability or a punch in the mouth can be for the greater good.”

These games against the Thunder are all part of the process of building the Spurs into a title contender, Keldon Johnson said.

“We still have so much to prove,” he said. “We haven’t done anything to be cocky or arrogant. Obviously, we want to prove we belong as one of the best teams in the league. And ultimately we’re preparing for our goal, and that’s being in the playoffs and making some noise in the playoffs. So for us, we just need to keep that chip on our shoulder knowing we still have so much to prove. We still have so much more to get better at. We have so much potential still.”
