The Spurs showed up to the Frost Bank Center fully healthy for the first time in nearly a month.

They promptly dropped a game to the worst team in the Western Conference. Three New Orleans players accounted for double-doubles as the Pelicans stunned the Spurs 104-95 on Sunday.

Zion Williamson and Saddiq Bey each had 24 points and 10 rebounds while Yves Missi added 10 points and 14 boards off the bench for the Pelicans.

The Spurs welcomed shooting guard Devin Vassell back to the fold after he missed 13 games with a left adductor strain. That gave the Spurs a full lineup for only the seventh time this season, and the first since Dec. 29.

They struggled to take advantage, turning in one of their worst offensive performances of the season. No Spurs player reached 20 points.

Victor Wembanyama paced the team with 16 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks, but was 6 of 16 from the field and 2 of 10 from 3-point range.

Having won at Memphis two nights earlier, New Orleans raced out to a 20-point lead in the third quarter and survived a furious Spurs comeback to pocket its second straight win.

The Pelicans’ first victory over the Spurs in four tries this season improved their season record to 12-36. The Spurs dropped to 31-15.

Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s defeat, which leads to an even tougher game Wednesday at Houston:

1. Just a sleepy, sloppy, unfocused performance

Often, when a basement-dwelling team takes down an upper echelon team, it can be a matter of the lesser team simply having a hot-shooting night.

That’s not what happened Sunday.

Midway through the third quarter, the Pelicans were shooting 46.2% overall, 34.8% from 3-point range and 57.1% from the foul line.

They were leading by 19.

Aside from the 25-5 run that got them back in the game in the second half, the Spurs were lackluster in almost every area. They were out-rebounded 58-46, and gave up 19 offensive rebounds resulting in a 26-9 deficit in second-chance points.

Normally a decent free-throw team, the Spurs missed 13 of them Sunday in 32 attempts – including two apiece by Wembanyama and Johnson in the span of one brutal possession down the stretch.

The Spurs used a 25-5 run to take a one-point lead midway through the fourth, and went ahead 92-87 on a Julian Champagnie dunk with 5:10 to go.

They didn’t manage another field goal until Champagnie put in a putback basket with 28.6 seconds remaining to cut a nine-point New Orleans lead to seven.

In the end, the Spurs set a season-scoring low against one the NBA’s bottom five defense. It all added up to arguably the team’s worst loss of the season.

2. Spurs could have used another Zion DNP

Williamson’s career has been mostly star-crossed since he became the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft. He entered Sunday’s game in the midst of one of the most health-filled stretches of his NBA life.

It marked Williamson’s 22nd consecutive appearance, the second-longest games played streak of his career, behind the 24 starts in a row he made from Jan. 15 to March 3 of 2021.

The Spurs would have benefited from Williamson taking the night off.

The two-time All-Star was the Pelicans’ catalyst Sunday. He had 12 of his points in the first half, including a nasty driving dunk past Wembanyama.

Williamson ended with his second straight double-double and his third since October.

3. Vassell return a welcome sight

Vassell didn’t exactly go nuclear in his first game in nearly a month, but he was solid enough.

The fifth-year pro registered 13 points on 5 of 12 shooting, though he was only 2 of 8 from the 3-point stripe. The Spurs called a pair of out-of-bounds plays for Vassell to stop droughts, and he delivered made jumpers on both of them.

Vassell will come off the bench for a while, at least as he ramps up to a full workload after such a long hiatus. The Spurs can certainly use his shot-making going forward.
