NEW ORLEANS — After a rousing season-opening win in Dallas, the Spurs arrived at the Smoothie King Center on Friday with one directive in mind.
Turn the page.
“Obviously, it was a great game with a lot of great performances from a lot of people,” guard Devin Vassell said, “but we’ve got to move on.”
Mission accomplished.
The Spurs kept their early-season momentum going, holding off New Orleans 120-116 in overtime.
Victor Wembanyama teased a triple-double with 29 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocks, Vassell chipped in 23, and the Spurs improved to 2-0 before coming home to the Frost Bank Center.
Wembanyama’s big performance came two nights after a 40-point, 15-rebound opus in the Spurs’ 125-92 blowout of Dallas.
The All-Star center fouled out with 4:17 remaining in OT, forcing the Spurs to hold on without him.
Zion Williamson had 27 points as one of three players with at least 20 for New Orleans, which lost its home opener to fall to 0-2.
Here are three takeaways from Friday’s victory, as the Spurs prepare for a home-opener of their own Sunday afternoon against Brooklyn:
1. Wemby made short work of the short-staffed Pelicans …
On paper, the game set up for another big Wembanyama night.
The Pelicans were without starting center Yves Missi, 6-11 backup Karlo Matkovic and reserve Kevon Looney, all players who might have drawn Wembanyama duty had they not been injured.
In an emergency effort to shore up frontcourt depth, New Orleans signed veteran big man DeAndre Jordan on Friday morning. The 37-year-old former All-NBA center had not played in an NBA game since Game 2 of last season’s Western Conference semifinals with Denver.
Jordan did not play Friday, but it probably would not have mattered if he did.
The Pelicans’ tallest starter was the 6-8 Herb Jones. The 6-7 Saddiq Bey was technically listed as New Orleans’ starting center.
At 6-6 and bear-like, Williamson had the most success guarding Wembanyama, relatively speaking.
There was little anyone in a New Orleans uniform could do to prevent another dominant Wembanyama performance.
2. … yet the Spurs won by winning non-Wemby minutes
Wembanyama fouled out 53 seconds into overtime. There was a time when this might have spelled disaster for the Spurs on both ends of the floor.
With the 7-1 Kornet anchoring the team on defense and Castle doing just enough on offense, the Spurs were able to bring the game home in OT.
This wasn’t a fluke, either.
Throughout the game, the Spurs actually outscored the Pelicans by 13 when Wembanyama was off the floor.
3. Spurs about to confront a good problem to have
All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox was among the players who stuck around after the Spurs’ shootaround Friday morning to play in a 5-on-5 scrimmage.
Fox has yet to make his 2025-26 debut due to a hamstring strain suffered he suffered in August.
Friday’s 5-on-5 session is a clear sign the 28-year-old is drawing close to a return.
When Fox does return, coach Mitch Johnson will have some decisions to make about how to deploy his trio of top ball-handlers, a list that includes Castle and rookie Dylan Harper.
Fox will be cemented into the starting lineup eventually, meaning someone from that group will have to move to the bench.
