3 takeaways as De’Aaron Fox shoots Spurs to a win at Utah

San Antonio Spurs guard De’aaron Fox (4) drives to the basket against Utah Jazz guard Walter Clayton Jr. (13) during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026, in Salt Lake City.
SALT LAKE CITY — De’Aaron Fox scored 12 of his 31 points in the final 6:54 of the fourth quarter, and the Spurs bounced back from a tough loss for a 126-109 win over the Utah Jazz on Thursday night in a clash of shorthanded teams.
Victor Wembanyama had 26 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks for the Spurs, and Keldon Johnson finished with 21 points off the bench. The win came two nights after the Spurs (31-14) blew a 16-point second quarter lead to lose by five points at Houston.
Rookie Ace Bailey had a season-high 25 points for the Jazz (15-30). Baylor-ex Keyonte George contributed 23. Jusuf Nurkic added 17 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds for a triple-double in back-to-back games.
The Spurs closed the game on a 27-10 run. Driving layups by Johnson and Stephon Castle, who finished with 16 points and eight assists, and 3-pointers by Wembanyama and Fox triggered the closing outburst.
Trailing by 12 at the break, the Jazz claimed the third period 39-32 to trail by 97-92 entering the final frame. Wembanyama opened the fourth by sinking a jumper, but Utah went on a 7-0 run to tie the score at 99-99 on a Bailey slam with 10:29 left.
After the first period ended in a 31-31 tie, the Spurs outscored the Jazz by 12 in the second quarter to take a 65-53 lead into halftime after leading by as many as 15 in the period. Wembanyama and Castle each scored eight points in the period while Johnson contributed seven.
Julian Champagnie also finished in double figures for the Spurs, scoring 17 points on the strength of five 3-pointers.
Devin Vassell (groin) missed his 13th game in a row for the Spurs, who were also without backup center Luke Kornet (groin). The Jazz played without Lauri Markkanen (return to competition reconditioning) and Walker Kessler (left shoulder injury recovery).
The Spurs have a couple of days off before hosting New Orleans, the league’s worst team, on Sunday.
Here are three takeaways from the final game of a two-game road trip that left the Spurs with a 14-9 record away from the Frost Bank Center.:
1. Fox was deadly from deep
The speedy guard showed off his stroke from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter, hitting 4 of 5 from downtown, including back-to-back bombs (Johnson assisted on both) that gave the Spurs a 115-105 lead with 4:25 left.
It was an impressive showing from distance for a player who came in shooting just 34.1% for the season.
For the game, Fox canned a season-high 6 shots on 9 attempts from the 3-point line. He was 10 of 13 overall for the game.
It was just another example of why he’s one of the NBA’s top closers.
2. Mitch dug deep into his bench and found a game McLaughlin
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson made a surprise move when he started the second period with little-used Jordan McLaughlin at the point.
It turned out to be a smart decision.
In his first meaningful minutes since November, the 6-foot seventh-year pro logged six minutes before giving way to Fox. During that time, the Spurs built a 13-point lead with McLaughlin recording three rebounds and two assists, including setting up rookie Carter Bryant for a driving finger-roll layup.
McLaughlin finished with nine minutes and a plus-8 rating.
Credit McLaughlin for staying ready and making the most of some unexpected playing time. And his coach for believing in him.
3. Kornet’s absence was felt
The Spurs survived without Kornet, who missed his first game since Dec. 5 with left adductor tightness, but his absence seemed to throw everything off.
Fortunately for the club, Mitch Johnson indicated the big man won’t be out long.
“He’s been phenomenal,” the coach said. “I’m not sure exactly where I would quantify what we’d expected, but he’s been more than that. And he’s obviously played more than just a few games without Victor. He’s played with Victor, he’s played alongside Victor and he has allowed us to continue to build a brand and style of play and identity we haven’t had to change, which is invaluable in this league.”
With Kornet out, Mitch Johnson gave extra minutes to rookie Carter Bryant (seven points and four rebounds in 13 minutes) and called on back-of-the-benchers Kelly Olynyk and Jeremy Sochan, who started the game as questionable with an illness.
