3 Takeaways as Wembanyama flexes All-Star mettle

Victor Wembanyama celebrated his impending All-Star appearance by leading the Spurs to their longest winning streak of 2026 on Monday.
The newly minted All-Star starter scored 33 points to go with 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals as the Spurs pounded Utah 123-110 in a Martin Luther King Day matinee at the Frost Bank Center.
Wembanyama accomplished that in less than 27 minutes.
Three hours before tipoff Monday, Wembanyama was named an All-Star starter for the first time in his career.
Then he went out and showed the Jazz why.
With the victory, the Spurs swept a three-game homestand and will head to Houston for Tuesday’s game riding their longest winning streak since posting eight-straight victories in December.
Stephon Castle added 18 points and eight assists for the Spurs, who did not trail in the second half.
Keyonte George led the Jazz with 30 points, but went 7 of 20 from the floor. He went 12 of 14 from the foul line.
Here are three takeaways from Monday’s victory, which improved the Spurs to 30-13:
1. All-Star Wemby rediscovers the 3-point line
The bulk of Wembanyama’s run to this year’s All-Star game came from inside the 3-point stripe. Most of his scoring this season has stemmed from an uptick in paint touches and mid-range jumpers.
Lately, however, Wembanyama’s 3-point itch has returned – and it’s working out for him.
By halftime Monday, Wembanyama had already attempted nine long balls, matching a season high. He made five of them on his way to 21 first-half points.

Wembanyama finished a season-best 7 of 12 from beyond the arc, bringing his totals during the Spurs’ three-game winning streak to 16 of 27. In 10 December appearances, Wembanyama averaged three 3-point tries per game. He did not make more than two in any of those games.
Since the turn of the new year, Wembanyama is attempting 5.4 3-pointers per game. Wembanyama began the season with a renewed emphasis on getting the ball at the rim, in the paint and on the post.
As defenses have adjusted, Wembanyama has made the necessary counter and reintroduced the 3-ball to his shot diet. He feasted from behind the arc Monday, this time at Utah’s expense.
2. A good day to be a Spurs rookie
Wembanyama was the unabashed star. His key running mates were rookies.
With 15 points, Dylan Harper had his highest-scoring game since going for 22 on Jan. 2 at Indiana. He was 6 of 7 from the field, added five assists, a steal and block off the bench.
The biggest development of the afternoon, however: Carter Bryant dunked. Twice.

After becoming almost infamous due to a bout of dunk yips — to the point teammates were threatening to shave his head if he kept missing — Bryant threw a pair home Monday. The second was a transition alley-oop lob from De’Aaron Fox in the fourth quarter.
Bryant finished with 11 points, his most of the season, and played a solid all-around floor game. All in all, it was an encouraging day for the Spurs’ two youngest players.
3. It was an MLK Day block party
The Spurs weren’t perfect defensively against the Jazz, but they certainly were active.
Eight different players recorded block Monday, the most for the Spurs this season. Luke Kornet led the team with three off the bench.
It marked the first time the Spurs had at least eight shot-blockers in a single game since January 19, 2022 – four years earlier to the day – when they did it against Oklahoma City.
The Spurs also got four steals from Fox to go with his 14 points and eight assists.
Through three quarters, Utah was 15 of 34 on field goals in the paint. The Jazz were able to pad that number a bit in garbage time, but make no mistake: The Spurs won the game by defending the rim.
