Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards didn’t hesitate when asked why he plays so well against the Spurs.

“They’ve got Wemby,” he said with a smile, referring to Victor Wembanyama. “He’s supposed to be the face of the league. So, I’ve always got to get up for that one.”

Edwards pumped in a career-high 55 points, but the Spurs and Wembanyama overcame it to hold on for a 126-123 win over the Timberwolves on Saturday night at the Frost Bank Center.

Playing 31 minutes, Wembanyama finished with 39 points — one shy of matching his season high — nine rebounds and two blocks.

Edwards had 26 points in the fourth quarter, but Wembanyama’s 12 points in the period allowed the Spurs to escape with the win after they blew a 25-point halftime lead.

“I loved it,” Edwards said. “I wish we could have just moved everybody out of the way and just checked up — me versus him.”

For his part, Wembanyama said he appreciated Edwards’ honesty and said it was an “honor” to have one of the league’s top players bring his best when facing him. When the teams played last week in Minneapolis, Edwards’ 3-foot runner with 16.8 seconds left handed Minnesota a 104-103 win.

“It makes me better, and it’s a show of respect,” the 22-year-old Frenchman said of Edwards being so motivated when facing him.
